When I:
PM> Install-Package squirrel.windows
Amongst other things, I get:
Install failed. Rolling back...
Install-Package : Could not install package 'Splat 1.4.0'. You are trying to install this package into a project that targets '.NETFramework,Version=v4.0', but the package does not contain any assembly references or content files that are compatible with that framework. For more information, contact the package author.
Thinking I could use the binaries from the releases section instead, but isn't this still going to be a problem?
Unfortunately .NET 4 isn't supported currently due to focusing on getting these betas out the door.
See the other discussion about prioritizing this: #35
Sorry I didn't check for existing discussions!
Partly it was some things in the "getting started" that seemed to imply non 4.5 apps were intended to be possible, because it says things like: "I don't care if your app isn't actually a .NET 4.5 app".
Hi @iamthefaker, it is possible to use Squirrel with a .Net 4.0 app, but since the installer will require .Net 4.5, it won't help you much. If you still want to do it, I'll probably have instructions up later today
Thanks, @paulcbetts .
I notice that @GeertvanHorrik in #35 says he may have a fork of your project that would allow the installer to run on .Net4.0 - I'm going to ask him about that.
It is only because I may need an installer for WinXP ... 20% of windows users still using it, apparently. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/09/01/windows_xp_use_finally_starts_to_slip_a_bit/
If your primary app audience isn't Chinese users, I am seriously skeptical that it's worth your time to support XP. Ship your product first and if there's an overwhelming request for XP support, then spend the time
+1, I only need it because some enterprise companies are still on NET 40 because it's the default being installed with Windows 7. Although I do not agree with their policy, I don't want to sell them no either.
If I have an app that will run on the version of the framework a user already has installed, I would prefer to give users a faster installation experience if I am able to.
We'll consider this post-1.0
Thank you.
Re: the chinese comment
My primary audience _isn't_ the chinese, but it is a corporate environment. And we all know how fast they move. Still have dozens of PCs on XP right now. Looking forward to a .Net 4.0-compatible Squirrel release. Until then I'll have to look for something else, unfortunately, as we need to get our software out the door as well ;)
I can live with it not working on XP, but it would be nice to get a better message when someone tries. See #282.
"It's like ClickOnce but Worksβ’" dosent hold true, ClickOnce actually works on XP but Squirrle does not?
Nope! It doesn't
4.0 is even deader than it was 12mo ago. Closed!
Deadier or not, as of 2017, corporate clients are still not willing to drop XP support from their requirements.
Any news on .net framework 4.0 support?

@ghuntley spent a day on it. Dropped because of reasons.
