We've just encountered the same issue upgrading from 1.1.9 to 1.2.0 however we use @Aspect. We have no issues running 1.1.9. Sample advice: @AfterReturning("execution(* com.foo.bar._.dao._.*(..)) && @annotation(auditRequired)")
I see that you've commented at https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-boot/issues/1929. Adding the application property seems to have resolved this issue. I assume there will be a more permanent backwards compatible fix in the future.

Runnng aop.Application.java produces an error as this:

Your @Around advice is very broad as it's targeting anything that's annotated with @Profiler. That causes Spring Framework's AOP infrastructure to try to proxy every bean in the application context. I'd recommend narrowing the scope of the advice by requiring the class to be in a particular package, for example:
@Around("execution(* aop..*(..)) && target(aop.Profiler)")
You're also not using the ProceedingJoinPoint. You need to call proceed on it and return its result:
@Around("execution(* aop..*(..)) && target(aop.Profiler)")
public Object around(ProceedingJoinPoint joinPoint) throws Throwable {
System.out.println("Before proceeding");
Object result = joinPoint.proceed();
