Spring-boot: Spring JDBC DataSource Initializer fails for schema with stored procedure definitions

Spring boot - 1.3.5; 1.4.0.M3
The Spring boot application crashes when schema.sql in the root of the classpath contains definitions of stored procedures.

The schema.sql.txt is created using the standard PostgreSQL dump tool. A similar crash happens when using Oracle RDBMS schema dump files with stored procedure definitions.

What is expected?
The application loads the schema during the boot process.

What is actually happening?
The application crashes with the following stack trace:

I don't think this is a bug. It looks like standard behaviour for Postgres' JDBC driver. See
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3499483/error-unterminated-quoted-string-at-or-near, for example.

I think you need to escape the line ending with a ; that's part of CREATE FUNCTION:

No, it is not the problem of the Postgres driver. A similar error (see stack trace below) happens when an Oracle schema script is used that contains stored procedure or trigger definitions. Flyway or IDEA have no difficulties when executing either of those scripts. I believe that the same is going to happen with any DBMS in similar circumstances.

The StackOverflow user 'manRo' mistakenly attributes the issue to JDBC, and is only partially right. JDBC does not break up the script into statements. Actually, it does not provide means for executing scripts at all. It is the responsibility of the application to provide statements - not scripts.

In this case, it is the responsibility of spring boot - org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.jdbc.DataSourceInitializer - in particular. It, in turn, delegates the work to org.springframework.jdbc.datasource.init.ScriptUtils#splitSqlScript which isn't smart enough to tell which semicolons are statement separators, and which are part of the trigger/stored procedure declaration.

To solve our problem - allowing the application user to load a database schema - we dug into flyway, and ended up leveraging their versatile org.flywaydb.core.internal.dbsupport package.

I agree that the problem is very rare, but it's still a bug. Ether in the code, or in the documentation that does not mention that schema containing composed statements is not supported.

Thanks for info, all. I followed @uweschaefer 's advice with the different separator: left the semi colon in the define procedure and replaced all other semi colon separators with / and was able to continue after encountering this with an Oracle script.

Looks like does not fix yet 🤕 I think that use fake delimiters is not cool. By this way must maintain two schemas - fake and real. In my case I would like to create database schema from real schema
