Signal-android: App fails to import all messages from default sms/mms app

Created on 27 Oct 2019  路  7Comments  路  Source: signalapp/Signal-Android

Bug description

The app doesn't import all of my messages, only 148 out of 17K. The oddest thing is that it doesn't even pick up the rest of the messages, just a small amount of them

Steps to reproduce

  • Open the app for the first time, make sure you have a lot of messages
  • Follow the setup prompts
  • Import the messages

Actual result:
It only imports 148 messages instead of everything from the message database on my phone.

Expected result:
Import all of my messages from my phone into the app

Disappointed to find this topic has received no assistance, since I am having the same issue.

It seemed to import all of my messages, but it didn't keep the images in them.

Same exact issue for me on an s10e.

I have 11620 messages, but signal only imports 3338. It would be less annoying if it only imported the most recent 3338 messages, but it imported messages from 2019 and nothing more recent. Well, that's not exactly true, it imported some messages from 2020, so the issue doesn't seem to be related to a date at least.

I tried to completely unninstal it and reinstall it and it imported the exact same wrong amount of messages.

Device: Samsung s10e
Android version: 10
Signal version: 4.69.4

When I imported my msgs, none of the MMS pictures transferred.

It also doesn't seem to import MMS group conversations and it never notifies the user that some messages were not imported.

I installed the application last week and encounter the same behavior : all my SMSs were transferred but no group discussion (MMS) and no images were transferred (MMS).

Also, I was using Google Messages as my default SMS application and I noticed that all archived SMS were transferred but it looks like the "archived" state does not exist in Signal, am I right?

Same issue on Google Pixel 3a XL. Android 11. Messages were previously in google messages.

The biggest problem seems to be in transferring messages between myself and another person who also used messages, so that our conversations were using Google's RCS. I noticed issues with the text chains with 3 people in particular, all of whom use messages so that all our conversations fall under RCS.

With Person 1, random messages from both of us were transferred at random points in time, but not after November 29 and I talk to this person every day. With Person 2, same situation. With Person 3, ONLY messages from her were transferred, none of my responses (except one, which I remember occurred right after I was having issues with the RCS service).
