Hello SDL community,

The review of "Modernize Ubuntu Support" begins now and runs through May 1, 2018. The proposal is available here:

https://github.com/smartdevicelink/sdl_evolution/blob/master/proposals/0164-modernize-ubuntu-support.md

Reviews are an important part of the SDL evolution process. All reviews should be sent to the associated Github issue at:

https://github.com/smartdevicelink/sdl_evolution/issues/478

What goes into a review?

The goal of the review process is to improve the proposal under review through constructive criticism and, eventually, determine the direction of SDL. When writing your review, here are some questions you might want to answer in your review:

  • Is the problem being addressed significant enough to warrant a change to SDL?
  • Does this proposal fit well with the feel and direction of SDL?
  • If you have used competitors with a similar feature, how do you feel that this proposal compares to those?
  • How much effort did you put into your review? A glance, a quick reading, or an in-depth study?
Please state explicitly whether you believe that the proposal should be accepted into SDL.

More information about the SDL evolution process is available at

@joeljfischer Agreed that dropping support for 14.04 should be a major version change, I suppose I hadn't considered this because it didn't require any changes to the public API.

With that said, I believe that adding support for the newer versions of Ubuntu was planned to be included in the next release of SDL Core. This means that the proposal would likely be implemented in two parts:

  1. Adding support for the new OS versions (16.04 and 18.04) in the next minor release of Core.
  2. Dropping support for 14.04 in the next major release of Core.

Not noted in the proposal, but required because of dropped support, this would have to be a major version change.

I support the change nonetheless at the next major version update.

The Steering Committee agreed to accept this proposal, noting the two implementation parts as described in jacobkeeler's comment.
