Salt: Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus Support
Ubuntu 16.04 is out. http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/
It includes a packaged copy of 2015.8.8, but Ubuntu packages have historically not been well updated and not gotten prompt security updates. Any timeline for official debs?

I'm not too familiar with the release cadence for Salt. Is there an ETA for the next point release?

@felicianotech, we're looking at tagging the next set of releases this week, so my guess is that they will probably be coming out sometime late next week if everything goes according to the plan.

The salt bootstrap script run by the vagrant salt provisioner fails miserably on 16.04, adding the non-existent source:
deb https://repo.saltstack.com/apt/ubuntu/16.04/amd64/latest trusty main
There should probably be a a way to alert users to the fact that a new distribution is not yet supported, or ideally in this case, just install salt from the main Ubuntu repos. Looking forward to being able to start using salt on this new LTS release.

Looks like the __ubuntu_codename_translation function in salt-bootstrap doesn't know about xenial. I'll try to whip up a PR tomorrow so that it at least adds the correct sources.list repo string even if it won't work until official xenial binaries are pushed to repo.saltstack.com upon the next point release.

@hackel @notpeter FYI Ubuntu 16.04 comes with Debian's packaged version of Salt 2015.8.8. Salt's package support for Ubuntu 16.04 is very soon.

Am I correct in assuming that with the 2016.3.0 release this issue is considered fixed?
While the release notes don't mention Ubuntu 16.04, the repo downloads page now does: https://repo.saltstack.com/#ubuntu

@felicianotech Yes we have support for Xenial for the 2016.3.0 release and this is considered fixed. We can definitely add that to the release notes.

@fake-name Ubuntu 16 support is only on the develop branch on the bootstrap script currently here. We'll be cutting a new stable bootstrap script release later this week.
