As a selected project on Google Summer of Code 2019, I have to integrate functionality from gem-web into RubyGems gem CLI.
I thought I should create an issue so it can be addressed when I made the PR. Besides that others contributors can make suggestions or comments here too.
_(This is a bit different from common issues here, so I filled this template the best as I could)_
My current problem is to integrate functionality from gem-web into RubyGems gem CLI.
This issue is related to:
gem$ gem env version
2.7.8
I will abide by the code of conduct.
Did you discuss this idea with the original author who is https://github.com/bitboxer/?
Well, this idea was on ideas list from the Ruby Org on GSoC 2019, so I thought everything was ok.
Anyway, I had a small talk with him, and he said that he hoped gem-web would be integrated.
Is there anything more I can/have to ask him? I could contact him, if needed.
I understood. I'm the release manager and the primary maintainer of rubygems. I never hear this idea. I'm not sure why we need this. And zoras who are a mentor of GSoC is not rubygems maintainer.
Two current maintainers of RubyGems (myself and @segiddins) approved the idea for GSoC. Personally, I would be happy to see gem-web integrated into RubyGems, and I would use it鈥擨 spend a lot of time opening websites for specific gems, and I would welcome shortcuts.
It's less than 100 lines of code total, provides functionality that I would find useful, and is so stable that the existing gem has not needed to be updated anytime in the last 5 years. Since it seems very stable, and unlikely to need additional maintenance in the future, I am in favor of adding it.
Now that I've voiced my personal support, I do think it's important to make it clear that GSoC projects are a way for open source development work to get done鈥攖hey don't imply a guarantee that whatever work gets done will be merged. I hope we can come to an agreement, though!
