As our team is customizing rubocop to our tastes, we're essentially creating our own fork of the style guide. Wouldn't it be cool if we could generate a custom style guide document from the rules we've defined in .rubocop.yml?
This would probably require the MSGs in cops to be more verbose, with the relevant section of https://github.com/bbatsov/ruby-style-guide
That's an interesting idea. We might implement something like this after the 1.0 release.
I think, semi-related, it would be good if each cop could create it's own part of the yml file as well. That way the cop file totally defines what it's about, what it checks, how it can be configured. This is especially useful when we do want to allow external cops (how else would people find out defaults for those, that would be a lot of copypasting work).
Great idea! :+1:
This is unlikely to happen any time soon, so I'll be closing this. Perhaps we can revisit it at some point in the future.
@bbatsov it's been a while since this was first brought up. Does it seem worthwhile to revisit for discussion?
I'd love to see this happen + help start building this out. @bbatsov - if I start working on this, would you consider accepting the feature once it is ready?
