Rocket.chat: weight emojis so that initially suggested emojis are not too personal/awkward or negative

Created on 22 Oct 2020  路  3Comments  路  Source: RocketChat/Rocket.Chat

Description:

Typing a colon (:) in the _Message_ input box shows an autocomplete list of emoji. This is currently sorted alphabetically, which sometimes places more personal emoji (e.g. :smil orders :kissing_smiling_eyes: before ) or negative emoji (e.g. :thumb orders  before ) in a more prominent position than more commonly intended emoji.

This is basically a duplicate of #19105 attempting to evade the close-issue-app bot.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open any channel or private group or private chat.
  2. Click into the message field.
  3. Type the beginning of an emoji name, e.g. :smil.

Expected behavior:

More commonly used/less personal emoji are offered before less commonly used/more personal emoji.

Actual behavior:

Emoji are offered alphabetically.

The Unicode Consortium has a default ordering of Emoji: https://unicode.org/emoji/charts-12.0/emoji-ordering.html

There are two choices of automatically updated machine-readable files which would allow for improved sorting. This would also match the emoji picker view (found by clicking the 馃槃 on the left in RocketChat).

I'd like to have a go at this

I had a look and I couldn't work out how the message box was being populated with a list of emojis, and why that was different to the list the emojiPicker gets. So not proceeding with this.
