Ripgrep: Wrong "Permission denied" error message on hidden files

Created on 9 Oct 2017  Â·  3Comments  Â·  Source: BurntSushi/ripgrep

rg refuses to search hidden files, reporting a permission denied error.

fcantournet ~ $ ls -lah .bashrc
-rw-r--r-- 1 fcantournet fcantournet 4,0K oct. 3 14:09 .bashrc
 fcantournet ~ $ rg -i complete .bashrc
.bashrc: Permission denied (os error 13)

This is only true directly from my home directory. if I move the file to a directory inside my home then it works.

 fcantournet î‚° ~ î‚° $ î‚° ls -lah testrg/

Version is 0.5.2. I'll try with 0.6.0 asap.

debug output :

For what it's worth : the behavior I encountered has nothing to do with ripgrep and everything to do with running inside snap default confinement.

If you end up here someday : snap install rg --classic will solve your problems.
The default strict confinement has some weird interactions with hidden files..

What version of ripgrep? What is the output with the --debug flag?

@BurntSushi It appears to be fixed in 0.6.0. :ok_hand:
