Red-discordbot: More trivia lists

Created on 11 Jan 2016  ·  103Comments  ·  Source: Cog-Creators/Red-DiscordBot

Now that the trivia system is completed it needs good lists of questions.
There are plenty of BAD lists floating around, with impossible to guess answers or just bad quality in general. If anyone is willing to help it would be greatly appreciated, my goal is to have at least a few of various topics and a good total number of questions.
The format is easy, one question per line and it supports multiple answers (as many as you want):

Thanks @Somrung , just added your list in the recent update.

I think my friends and I would be interested in making trivia lists. also we've noticed a few mistakes/typos in the existing lists. Could you add a command that provides a tutorial/method of adding a custom trivia list?

@dong-brian There's really not much to say about it. They're simple text files, I explained the format in the first post. You follow that format, one question each line. Once you're done you drop them in the "trivia" folder and Red will be able to use them (make sure that no space is in the filename).
If you want to contribute by fixing current lists or adding new ones either make a pull request or send them directly to me on Discord. Thanks

@Twentysix26 Yeah I know, just mentioning that a feature similar to users adding custom playlists would be convenient. Not a big deal, I could probably make those changes on my own when I get the chance.

memes.txt

A work in progress or Part 1 of more to come, as I do enjoy my memes. ;P

I'm currently working on a list of over 2300 Disney related questions. Will post when it's completed.

I am in desperate need of those Disney questions @rfilkins1992 ;)

Starwars.txt
Thats a star wars one a friend or two of mine and I made. Its pretty nice imo, but only 185 questions, not as many as some of the others here. May be updated in the future with more stuff from episode 7 or 8

@Mahlss thats more than most. the only ones with more than 150 are world trivias

I've worked on a cog that can download a trivia repo. Maybe you can make use of that somehow. (Like making a GitHub repo specifically for the trivia lists, then just adding a command to fetch the latest versions.)

don't see the need for that if people can just upload their lists here.

Thank you for putting time into this though

Just made a Dota 2 Ability Icons trivia! Had fun playing the world flags one so here you go:
dota2abilities.txt
dota2items.txt

Edit: Added another one.

I've made a picture based trivia list where users need to guess the car model. I tried to make it as lenient as possible by allowing multiple answers, including make + model, or just the model by itself, as well as some abbreviations and so forth. So far it's 73 cars long, but i will expand it over time.

Example: http://i.imgur.com/qBGihwI.jpg

cars.txt

Before Legion arrives, brush up on your Warcraft lore!
warcraft.txt

Added so far: warcraft, dota2abilities, dota2items, starwars, leagueults

Do you think you know everything about Clash Royale? If yes, try my trivia! Warning: some questions are hard! Edit: Thanks for featuring my trivia in the update!

One Piece anime quiz
op.txt

Approved: Final Fantasy, Periodic Table
Rejected (vague subjective questions, poor grammar, improper formatting): Memes, Animals

One piece - not properly formatted and will not work. I can just attempt to fix it and merge it with anime trivia.
Star Trek - I feel like this trivia is yelling at me... Also there's a lot of wrong characters that won't show up properly and some questions are not properly formatted.

In case anyone is wondering/wants to help/fix typos/for the record, the one that I made are:
2015, 2016, anime, computers, disney, dota2abilities, dota2items, general2, greekmyth, harrypotter, leaguefacts, slogans, uscapitals, worldcapitals (both dota lists' images were outdated so I remade them - sorry!)

Other credits: pokemon - waterpotato

Can you specify what exactly is the problem, it works fine on my red bot.

Not all questions are improperly formatted. Things like this are not:
What is the name of the only named camel in onepeice? -eyelashes / Matsuge
Originally from which village of Eastblue is Zoro from? Simotsuki village (Also questionable grammar)

Also, you have to make them realistically answerable. No one is going to type out symbol characters while playing trivia.
Which sword is placed in zoro's mouth during combact? -Wadō Ichimonji

Vague: Name the 2 characters shown in the pic. http://imgur.com/nbyQ0V9law bepoLaw and bepo
You have to cover all the bases, what if someone answers Bepo and Law? They're technically right but they won't get the point.

Minor grammatical errors and typos throughout: What is the name of Vice Admiral that have been ordered to take Boa Hancock for a coming war?`momonga

It can definitely be fixed up then approved~

Here are some lists I promised I would post a week ago. I got a little sidetracked by classes starting ;_;.

Credit to this reddit post for the excel sheet I used for the list. . There are still 3 or so categories I need to do, but each .txt file has soooo many questions already. If there are any problems, lmk and I'll fix them. For the most part, I tested each on our bot and it seemed to work just fine =).

Consider: Family Feud, Riddles

Side note: periodic table renamed to elements

starwars.txt

added more trivia from the 8th movie and some more stuff from the series, should be up to date now, added about 50 more questions. it should be all set to go, might want to double check my work though before putting it into red

New/Approved/Cleaned up/Done: N/A

Updated: final fantasy (thanks KrisDLuna!), anime, disney, leagueults, leaguefacts (note to self: update galio facts with new champion lore update), cars (thanks lumpycustard+mikel392), starwars (ty Mahlss and Fjall),

To Do: Another General (or 2), Geography, History and Holidays

Maybe: Star Trek

Continue: Anime, Greek Mythology

Consideration: Family Feud, Riddles

Rejected: One piece (I can't be bothered to fix it up, I just scavenged the usable parts and merged it with anime)

Extra: merged general+general2

If anyone does want to make a Family Feud one, perhaps this could be of assistance?

I've submitted a pull request for a new trivia topic. Please consider adding it :)

New: NBA (credit: aeari), boombeach (credit: @zmoTbb ), computers

Updated: leaguefacts, cars, games (thanks for catching the typos Kektus)

My server has an overwatch Trivia that was made by one of our server members. I was wondering if you wanted to add it?

OverwatchV1.txt

If we update it or create a new one, will let you know.

I started to create a Pull request for you @ThePheonixGuy but I believe that your submission is likely going to be rejected.

Suggestion: You have questions with answers like "20" but no secondary option like "twenty". Another example: "27 october" is an answer but you don't allow October 27 or Oct 27 or 27 Oct, etc.

If you clean up the answers a bit you've got a better chance of having the trivia included.

New: Overwatch (credit: ThePhoenixGuy) - I had to fix it up a bit like I do with most lists, but don't worry it's much better than a lot of other submissions so it would't just get rejected out of hand for that.

Updated: starwars (fixed error - thanks Harmelodic), finalfantasy (thanks KrisDLuna as always - your trivia is always beautiful and organized T^T), cars error (thanks Dom)

To Do: Another General (or 2), Geography, History and Holidays, pokemon

Maybe: Star Trek

Continue: Anime, Greek Mythology, Computers

Consideration: Family Feud, Riddles

Rejected: N/A

here is a pokemon list
pokemon.txt

New: Pokemon (credit: grantguglielmo) - btw the answers are not case sensitive so you don't need to cover every possible capitalization

Updated: finalfantasy, renamed the old pokemon to whosthatpokemon
-leagueults, leagueoflegends, overwatch, games

To Do: Another General (or 2), Geography, History and Holidays

Maybe: Star Trek

Continue: Anime, Greek Mythology, Computers

overwatch.txt created my own overwatch trivia quiz and merged with the existing one

I don't know if I'd call it "merging it with the existing one" if you delete the first 100 questions

i did make it a month or so ago have more been added since then ?

nvm just looked at the lists fixed it now
overwatchupdated.txt

Hey all, the people on my discord server like the trivia function a lot! Any way I can help out? Checking new lists or checking current lists for mistakes?

@Wouterhevw you can do both, or even make a new list

game of thrones trivia with 127 questions:
gameofthrones.txt

@Wouterhevw - The most useful thing is just making new lists, I've personally read through and checked every approved trivia list so they should be fairly correct and hopefully mistake free. (ofc I can still make mistakes).

If you want to be helpful:

  1. If you know about things such as dota or one of the other subjects on things that are constantly updated that would be cool for factchecking and updating (for example, I have to update the league lists every few months).
  2. If you want to make brand new lists, I suggest finding things you're interested in or consolidating from pre-existing lists. Just make sure formatting is correct, answers are flexible and thorough in spelling and combination possibilities. For trivia - hopefully challenging but not impossible.
    We appreciate everything.

Updated: leagueults, leagueoflegends, overwatch (thanks @sinsterpyro)

To Do: Another General (or 2), Geography, History and Holidays, IRC trivia lists (games), gameofthrones, jeopardy, fix flags

The flag of Sao Tome and Principe is supposed to have two stars, not one.

Here is a US flags trivia with 55 questions (it includes both states and territories). I designed the trivia the same way that the world flags one was designed and I thought that if there was a world flags trivia there may as well be a US flags one too. I hope it is approved. Thanks!
usflags.txt

Here are nearly 200,000 Jeopardy! questions, divided up into four files to make the load time a manageable ~20 seconds (at least on my server). They're divided alphabetically by category: A-C, D-L, M-S, and T-Z.

It's...a lot to check manually, but should be free of any major issues like typos, etc. Only problems I've seen in some limited testing: some answers use hypens, quotation marks, or an "a" or "the" that could be corrected, but I don't think there's a solution other than going line-by-line. Crowdsourcing hotfixes from various trivia channels is probably better. :)

Maybe: Star Trek

Rejected: gameofthrones - not proofread properly. (questions like "Which of these creatures have NOT appeared in the first three seasons of Game of Thrones?`Gorillas) also just low quality questions in general. Will be rewriting this from scratch soon myself.

@MiniJennJenn Can I do Matrix :3

sure just drop it here

@MiniJennJenn I updated the trivia file a couple of times after posting the comment so if the current one attached to my comment could be replaced with the one in the trivia folder then that would be great.

trivia folder? I'm just pulling from this thread and I fixed the worldflags one from the comment as of 2 days ago

@MiniJennJenn I'm not really GitHub savvy but what I mean is that the trivia file attached to my comment right now is different than the one that is in data/trivia (The folder where all the other trivia files are).

oh ok. we can blame @palmtree5 for putting in the wrong one :)
jk i'll update it in the new PR. Thanks~

And... I'm back with a new trivia and this time it's World Maps so you have to identify what country is highlighted when a map shows up! I think it's pretty fun and will definitely help you learn where each country is located.
worldmap.txt

This will probably be my last installment of Geography trivia, the USA map. In this trivia you must identify each state and major territory of the United States, very similarly to how I made my World Map trivia. I hope it is accepted, thanks!
usmap.txt

New: usmap , worldmap (thanks @Volhosis for both), gameofthrones (this will still be expanded on and worked on)

Fixed: dota2items, dota2abilities (issue with links to images and the embedded image not showing up, Thank you sverit for finding the solution in #944 )

To Do: General (or 2), Geography, History and Holidays, IRC trivia lists (games), Jeopardy, more GoT
-will do all of these after my exam T_T

New: none

Updated: leagueoflegends (new evelynn), leagueults (new evelynn), harrypotter (typo), general (total re-edit), entertainment (typo), clashroyale (1 question)

Hey there,

Not sure how interested you might be in this niche category, but I created this trivia list for my subreddit's Discord server for Gundam related trivia.

Gundam.txt

Thinking about helping out here soon

Is there a database somewhere for the questions?

Yes it's in the code...https://github.com/Cog-Creators/Red-DiscordBot.. otherwise no the questions are being written and compiled by this community not gotten from a database somewhere.

Additionally, I'm considering the current trivia "v2 feature locked" with the v3 beta coming out. There will be a new format for creating trivia lists which will be announced once finalized. All previous lists will be ported to the new format. It shouldn't be too complicated but this is why I'm waiting before more trivia is released.

@StroudDavion thanks I'll take a look at it but it'll have to be ported soon. Appreciate it

I'm assuming what you mean by 'it's in the code' is there is some way to either add more or download more lists from within discord? If so, how is that done?

No as in all the lists are built into the bots code and are already available as a core part of the bot. If you want more trivia, feel free to make it yourself and add it to your bot. If you want to contribute to everyone's trivia feel free to put it here in this thread.

@dannymichel To clarify, trivia lists are simple txt files that you can find inside the data/trivia folder.
You can add more at will, given that you have file access.

usstateabbreviations.txt
I added this to my own one but it would cool for it to be universal.

anyone got a science trivia they would like to share? :)

Hey everyone,
So as you may be aware, v3 of the bot is now in open beta and is open to the public. As one of the core cogs for Red, trivia is being rewritten although not fully completed as there are a lot of new features being implemented. One of the new updates to the trivia cog involves a new format for trivia files which are now .yaml files.
Previously the format was:
Question`Answer`Answer`Answer
The new format will be:
Question:
-Answer
-Answer
-Answer
Answers are not case-sensitive for detecting answers. However, keep in mind the bot will pull the first answer if no one answers correctly and will display it with case sensitivity so the first answer should look pretty ;).
Old trivia lists have been converted over and can be found here: https://github.com/Cog-Creators/Red-Trivia/tree/master/redbot/trivia/lists

All new trivia updates will be made in the new format, so we'd appreciate new submissions being in that format as well. This has been part of the reason we've had a bit of a pause in making and releasing new trivia, but the format has been finalized now. After release of the cog, we'd love beta testing feedback on the function of trivia and if anyone has noticed any bugs/mistakes.

To Do: Gundam, usstateabbreviations, General (or 2), Geography, History and Holidays, IRC trivia lists (games), Jeopardy, more GoT

V3 Trivia Lists

Converting trivia lists from V2 to V3 format has never been easier! Just make sure you have python and pip installed and follow the instructions here: https://github.com/Tobotimus/trivia-yaml/blob/master/README.rst

All core lists have been already converted over and are located at the link Jenn supplied above 😀

Note: I highly suggest you use this tool to write V3 trivia lists, as writing YAML manually can lead to some unexpected issues and syntax errors. YAML has far more reserved keywords and operators, whereas the old trivia list format only holds special meaning to the backtick and newline. Using this script guarantees your list can be parsed by Red in V3.

Sports trivia that has around 130 so far, more will be added over time.
V2: sports.txt
V3: sports.yaml

If you would like to help contribute to adding more, feel free to message me on discord (hatred#0041)

New: sports (thanks @FORSCOM)

Updated: leagueoflegends (zoe), leagueults (zoe), nba (thanks @mrfizzl3 )

To Do: History and Holidays (before Christmas), General (or 2), Geography, IRC trivia lists (games), Jeopardy, more GoT

Maybe: Star Trek

New & Updated: nba
PR: #1162

Hey everyone, thanks to all the hard working core devs, trivia lists now have a way to give author credit! I have already taken the liberty of going ahead and adding author credits to all existing credits - so don't worry your names are all there. For everyone else, if you want to contribute, now you know your name will be there!

Updated sports trivia for V3. Added about 90 more questions based on team names.
v3: sports.yaml

Updated: nba (thanks @mrfizzl3 ), entertainment typos (thanks @TheFixed)

In progress: History, Holidays

If you want to update the sports trivia, use the currently existing trivia as that one has been edited and revised properly.

UPDATE 30/01/18: Sorry Jenn, hope you don't mind me "moving" this comment down so I can keep better track. Will be continuing work on this!
17/05/17: Quick push for added FFX/X-2, XIV, XV content, with minor revisions. 675 entries.

Totally good, that way I don't have to dig up in the thread to find out if you've updated. Let's remove this question about the author. Especially since v3 now has a way to credit the author.

New: usstateabbreviations (thanks @Pqrallel - sorry this got lost in the shuffle previously)

Can't upload YAML, so here's the txt version

Rainbow 6 Siege:

Red V2: r6siege.txt

Red V3: r6siege v3.txt
(ditto on bobloy's comment about YAML)

(I'll update these again when the next major patch comes out)

The previously uploaded lists contained a handful of errors (a couple questions in both lists weren't specific enough so were technically wrong, and a couple of questions in v3 had incorrect layout/formatting).

Updated lists (will still update again in ~2 weeks or so for next major patch):
r6siege.txt
r6siege v3.txt

As promised, updated Siege lists for Operation Chimera:

r6siege.txt
r6siege v3.txt

I also added an additional question related to Sledge in this version of the list.

Here's the Rocket League trivia we made for the Rocket League server. We wanted to give it to the public, so here it is.

rocketleague v2.txt
rocketleague v3.txt

Updated and expanded zelarpmaster's Rocket League trivia, then separated and expanded ingame item trivia into its own whosthatpokemon-style category (with 330 questions).

rocketleague v2.txt
rocketleague v3.txt

rocketleagueitems v2.txt
rocketleagueitems v3.txt

Reuploaded all images to imgur and added plural options for wheels since it seems like a common tendency within the rocket league community to refer to wheels as such.
rocketleagueitems v2.txt
rocketleagueitems v3.txt

@SoopyTV about the rocketleagueitems list: I think it's better if the trivia would use images hosted on a site like imgur instead. At the moment only a couple of the images in that list are on imgur, which could become an issue in the future if the other site decides to change image names, or delete the images.

Besides that, I think the changes are good! One issue now though is that the plain rocketleague trivia is kinda short. So we may need some more questions for that ^^

Star Trek, the one I have uploaded myself (to Red v2) I found somewhere along the way but it has all capitals at times as well. There was a request also for it to be 'less - behind the scenes' type.

TIA,
Sasha - LLAP Lounge

I had corrected the camel case from my original submission a while ago.. I am linking the new version.

I hadn't added more "not behind the scenes" stuff.

startrek.txt

Cool, @BMCSamael (I had since as well.) Apologies I don't often log in here with this account. I also attained some more Star Trek Trivia's from a Star Trek Discord (v nice of them).

Here today though to share my Dr Who trivia had done it up on a request a short while back. It's only 4 pages, let me know or share again here if anyone wants to add to it.

Hope some find it of use

drwho.txt

made a pokemon guessing trivia which includes a silhouette for every single pokemon, and every single form (Alolan/Mega/variants) except for ones I thought were unfair (like Alolan Sandshrew + Vulpix looks too much like regular Sandshrew/Vulpix)

this works the same as the current whosthatpokemon list, but uses amazon s3 as the image provider, obfuscates the link, and just includes way more than the original 151 in general

feel free to do whatever with it, I initially made this for my friend group

whosthatpokemon.txt

Sorry for the long trivia hiatus, but here we are

New:
-

  • games (thanks @bobloy for submitting boardgames but since most of the questions weren't "boardgames" I combined it with the pre-existing games list)
  • sports (some of the questions from the aforementioned boardgames list went into this category as well)
  • r6seige (thanks @MHLoppy !)

Updated:
-

  • leagueoflegends
  • leagueults

To Do:

    • Update DotA

    • Rocket League

    • whosthatpokemon

    • Dr. Who

    • Star Trek

    • History

    • Holidays

    • Fortnite?

Lord of The Rings please! Needed desperately! :)

Is the trivia file allowed to have blank/empty lines?

@Sonicwave yes, if I recall correctly it discards invalid lines so you could even put comments to better organize your list

Presidents trivia that I made a long time ago:
uspresidents.txt

Trying to convert a Cisco trivia list from our old bot to Red. Previously I could use ` to create inline code for the trivia questions, but that looks like the delimiter being used now. Is there a way I can still use the inline code with Red? Not sure if I can quote everything w/ " to preserve the `'s. Purpose for the inline code is to clearly show input or a command for some questions.

@bryonadams ` cannot be used for formatting in trivia questions / answers

lotr.txt
Lord of the Rings trivia. I spent hours on this. I got the questions/answers from some website, don't remember, bit I had to write a converter to put it into Red's format, and also hand-formatted the answers. It needs work. You're welcome.

EDIT: Looks like it has some Lord of the Rings Online stuff too. And movie stuff.

Is there an easy way to convert trivia lists for using ` to using * instead?

Yes, just use UNIX shell tools, or PowerShell, or a little python/perl
script.
