Hey guys,

When trying to run my react native app in android, from the CLI, I get this error:
Task :react-native-firebase_app:compileDebugJavaWithJavac FAILED

What went wrong:
Execution failed for task ':react-native-firebase_app:compileDebugJavaWithJavac'.

java.lang.NullPointerException (no error message)

But when I run the app from Android Studio, the issue is not present, it works completely fine and the app launches.

Build Error Bug Android Solution Provided User Issue

Getting a NullPointerException during compile is going to be a tool-specific error, but we really need that stack trace.

From the command line I think you can follow the error instructions (usually something like "run with --stacktrace" to get details) and get more details, so you want to re-run the build in the android directory with something like ./gradlew assembleDebug --stacktrace and then post the whole stack trace in here

Also, you might verify your local environment is working in general by trying https://github.com/mikehardy/rnfbdemo/blob/master/make-demo.sh

Strange. My setup is fairly similar and it works. Some things that might be different:

  • Java9, I believe Java8 is important. Android Studio is probably using Java8. Looks like Java9 on the command line
  • Make sure you are on gradle 6.7.1 (in here https://github.com/invertase/react-native-firebase/blob/master/tests/android/gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.properties) - use cd android && ./gradlew wrapper to regenerate files if needed - 6.7 should work too as you can see, but 6.7.1 is current
  • you may have better luck with android gradle plugin 4.0.2 unless you are careful and integrate a patch: https://github.com/facebook/react-native/pull/30177 - was merged but not released yet it will be in react-native 0.64

It was the Java version! I followed the steps in this answer here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/40754792. This allowed me to easily change into different versions of Java. After this, I jumped into J8 and it worked!

I also made the change to my Gradle version to version 6.7.1.

Glad that helped - thank you for filling out the full template. You never know which tiny detail becomes the only thing that matters. Be careful with that bug I mentioned though about bundling and the 4.1.x gradle plugin vs 4.0.x. You'll only notice that on release mode so it might bite you when you don't expect it.
