Quarkus: JAX-RS Client API produces warnings in native image mode

Describe the bug
The usage of the JAX-RS Client API causes ClassNotFoundExceptions in native image mode.

Client restClient = ClientBuilder.newClient();
String result = restClient.target("http://localhost:8080")
        .path("/hello/echo")
        .request(MediaType.TEXT_PLAIN)
        .get(String.class);

Expected behavior
All needed classes are registered correctly for GraalVM native image.
No Warnings with exceptions in the log-file.

@haraldatbmw so here is the story:

When a native image is going to be created, Quarkus needs to know (from the REST method signatures and @Produces / @Consumes annotations) all the content types that will be used - and using the JAX-RS Client does not allow us to know those types.
The reason we need to know those content types is to inform GraalVM of the existence of classes that handle them so GraalVM doesn't completely remove them (as being unused ) when building the native image.

Using the JAX-RS client in native mode may or may not work depending on what content types the rest of your application already defines as being used.

Question: Is there a specific reason you want to use the (programmatic) JAX-RS Client instead of the (declarative) MicroProfile REST Client?

@gsmet and I were thinking that due to the complexities of using the JAX-RS Client in native mode that perhaps it should be disallowed completely.

@geoand The reason of using the JAX-RS client instead of the MP REST client is my generic use-case. I'm not able to call a MP REST client in a generic way, I always have to use a concrete service-interface. With the JAX-RS client api I am able to make the service-calls in a generic way.

Is there a way to explicit tell the GraalVM which type of client I am using?

@rmh78 not exactly, what you are seeing is RESTEasy trying to load every provider and failing on some...

So this use case works, but you can easily run into cases where your calls will fail at runtime.

We can't tell GraalVM what RESTEasy Provider to use for the content types handled by the JAX-RS client because that client is programmatic. So you can basically do whatever you want.
When using the declarative approach of the MicroProfile REST Client, we can infer these automatically.

We only register the providers that are actually being used by the application. This is done in order to minimize the optimize the native image.

Exactly, which is why @gsmet are thinking that perhaps we should fail with a good error message when the REST Client is used.

Basically using the REST Client in the closed world of GraalVM is just too risky

Doku says:

RESTEasy will automatically load a set of default providers. (Basically all classes listed in all META-INF/services/javax.ws.rs.ext.Providers files).

Maybe it's possible to remove all not at GraalVM registered providers so that RESTEasy does not try to load them.

Yeah, that is an option, but it's not something Quarkus can do, it requires changes in REST Easy.
But that is just a band-aid for the logs problem you are seeing. The real problem of not knowing if the calls will actually work would not be solved

Do we allow the use of the client and let users figure out if it works at runtime? Or do we fail cleanly indicating that using something open-ended (like the JAX-RS REST Client) in the closed world of GraalVM just shouldn't be done.

Yeah, the issue is that using the ClientBuilder API directly does not give enough information to Quarkus to take the right decision. You might be lucky and it might work as in your case (for a loose definition of "work" as you have a lot of warnings).

But if for instance, your REST service is JSON and your client is accessing an XML one, then it will completely fail.

The idea behind the interface of the MP Rest Client is to declare what you're going to do with your client and, in a closed world assumption, it's critical information.

I found a working generic solution for my use-case with MicroProfile REST Client instead of the JAX-RS Client API. This solution works without side-effects in native image mode :-)

I have updates my reproducer project with both solutions:

MP REST Client (without warnings)
JAX-RS Client (with exception warnings)

So I'm fine if you disable JAX-RS Client API in native image mode.
