Qownnotes: [I] Layout resets to minimal state on restart

Expected behaviour

Application should maintain workspace layout from last time application was closed.

Actual behaviour

Application resets current workspace to minimal state on restart.

Steps to reproduce

1. Delete minimal workspace, switch to full workspace.
2. Restart application.
3. Layout gets reset, only notes search/folders/statusbar/text panels are visible. Toolbar is hidden as well.
4. Click "show toolbar" and "show all panels".
5. Restart.
6. Layout resets once again.

Relevant log output in the Log panel

Nothing to see here. Application can not be restarted without quitting issue assistant.

I cannot reproduce this here on KDE Neon. :( I removed all workspaces but full. After restarting the application I had the previous full workspace as it should be.

Actually all those steps are not even needed. I reproduced it like this as well:

1. Deleted QOwnNotes.conf
2. Start application
3. Switch to full workspace so that change is more visible
4. Restart
5. Layout resets

I could try debugging. Some pointers what i could look at would be very helpful

I have it setup with a note-search/note-list/tag-search/note-tags column and a preview I switch between that (alt-shift-P) and just an edit pane. When restarted the edit pane is gone (no panes activated) but the other preview based ws remains intact with all panes.

I still think your Qt may have troubles with storing the state of the panels...

I did the following stuff which I will include here BUT I discovered that whatever ws was open when I close the app loses it's layout. One by one I opened a ws then closed the app and lost the layout for that particular ws until they were all blank (this was with noteEditIsCentralWidget = false). Repeating this with true - the same effect except that only the note edit panel was left.

The "full" ws somehow though after being blank seemed to inherit the minimal ws (which still had a layout at the time) after the third restart or maybe it was conicidence that it got the same panel although I tried to recreate this effect and couldn't though.

Older TB:

  Still lose layout - retain same layout in the two workspaces (minimal and customized ws) nothing in the first (full).

I added a third (beyond the minimal and full for a total of 5) workspace (test1, test2, test3) the last one added lost the customizations and displayed the note edit panel only the first two customized ws retained their layout but see below.

I then toggled noteEditIsCentralWidget to false and the three customized ws lost their layout.
With noteEditIsCentralWidget = true I retried creating three customized ws all 5 had some panels activated.

I restarted the app and all but the last ws was retained the last one added was now blank.
I restarted the app again and now the first (full) ws was now also blank.
I readded some panels to the full ws space and my last ws - restarted and the full ws retained the panel and the last added ws did not.

So I think I use this work around - using my first and second customized ws as I like (note-search/note-list/tag-search/note-tags column and preview workspace and note edit by itself)

I'm happy to try out some more trouble shooting but I suffer from losing the hierarchical menu as I mouse (I think it's also a qt thing which is extemely frustrating).

The workaround I am using is to simply try and remember to close the app on a dummy ws then select my working ws's - then I can toggle alt-shift-P.

Thank you for the elaborate tests! What desktop environment are you using? When QON is closed the state of the app is persisted. It really seems that something is done to the layout before this persisting happens.

You could try to disable that line to test what happens then. If that works you could try to put it in an other method that will be called when the app closes.

I have this problem too. But not this one, hotkeys save, but invisible in settings.
My OS Manjaro 18 with KDE (Plasma 5.14.5, KDE Frameworks 5.53.0, QT 5.12.0).

Whatever is causing this it must come from some event that happens when application is closed. As someone figured out already - only active layout gets reset when application is closed. Any other layouts properly retain their properties provided they are not active when application is closed.

Maybe something goes wrong inside QMainWindow::saveState in your Qt installation, but you will only know if you step through above code.

Boooom, since KDE Neon updated to Qt 5.12.0 I sometimes can reproduce a similar issue on one computer.

I just found out something strange. Beside only having this issue (I loose my panels and the toolbar) on one PC that was updated to Qt 5.12 I found out that it only occurs in Dark mode. Can you please try to disable dark mode and test if this issue still persists.

And a 3rd thing, I only can reproduce the issue if I quit QOwnNotes with the x in the top right corner (or the HUP signal). If I quit it with Ctrl + Q everything works fine the next time I start it.

Yes, you're right. I disabled dark mode and the layout persisted. So it's something related to the dark mode.

Also confirmed. Re-enabled dark mode and tried via Ctrl + Q and the layout was okay at the next start. The moment I used X the layout got lost.
