When you launch the game. And you have to kill the process to go back to the desktop.
It didnt create a log. I have it set up to make logs.
@kisak-valve I have added a game log file
Same here.
Steam Info and Proton logfile.
Something seems to be going on with "dinput.dll" .
Same here, game launches and freezes entirely
Tried running again with proton version 3.16-4, still freezing on launch. Logs in case they're useful.
steam-372360.log
steam_system_info.txt
Edit to avoid mass ping: As per these test results on WineHQ, I tried following the instruction to turn fullscreen off in the config file. Unfortunately, game still freezes.
I have additional information for this bug; If you start the game with wine instead of proton and have installed steam into the prefix (winetricks steam), it start steam.exe. It then ask to install the game in the steamapps folder of that prefix. If you do and try to start the game again with the windows steam running in Wine, the game will launch normally and will not crash. This means that this game work properly in Wine and the issue is somewhere else.
I couldn't test protontricks 372360 steam because it didn't work, but I am pretty sure the solution is in that direction.
steam-372360.log
Log on latest proton. Using custom built proton from wine 4.7/4.8 I see no difference in the crash behavior. This game does play videos on startup which is probably at least part of the problem. One of the video workarounds might help.
It's probably a DRM issue (CEG, from Steam...). The solution from @enimog is exactly how to fix this issue. The other solution for other games is to use a cracked exe, but none of them I've tested work =/
So I sort of used @enimog's solution and did get around whatever the hanging issue is. I linked my common folder into WineSteam's steamapps, and just discovered the files rather than installing new ones.
The game runs okay. I'm loading into a cloud save and discovering that the save file menu is really slow. Battles are okay, except when particles start to get crazy. That said, any battle with Colette in it (at the point I'm at she's got her "angel wings", purple/pink particle effects that are constantly following her) is super slow.
So on top of possible DRM issues, we've got some graphical issues.
Also, I actually tried running this under Proton and rather than a black window, the game is now hanging on a white screen. Here's a new log:
Tales of Symphonia works out of the box with Proton 5.0-5.
I can also confirm, Tales of Symphonia work out of the box with Proton 5.0-5
I can also confirm that it works out of the box.
...but the out-of-the-box experience actually kinda sucks a little bit. Like... the textures look like booty. So I wanted to install TSFix so I could inject 4K textures and other fixes. It didn't work. It looks like it needs vcomp140.dll.C2VectParallel, which wine has stubbed out and unimplemented. Kaldaien--the mod author--says it's related to the mod having been built with OpenMP support, and he doesn't have access to an older codebase that he could build without it.
Here's the link to that discussion.
Would getting that to work be in context for this issue?
