Proton 3.7-5 Beta
All is fine
Works OK for me. Steam info here. Performance is not the best (30-50fps, some stutter) and changing detail level from high to medium has no impact. Can't say if it's because Proton, or because game is still in alpha. There's minor but visible glitching in graphics from time to time (Most likely a driver issue, seen it with few other games too) but it's not that obtrusive and does not affect gameplay in any way.
game runs for me but upon creating a new character I can't move at all. tried twice
Public beta roadmap for October so perhaps compatibility will be changing for the better.
https://wolcengame.com/beta-transition-planning/
This game needs Steam (Runtime) for internet access.
If someone use solus "native runtime" must be disabled in their "linux-steam-integration tool".
LLVM 7 or newer is needed to play without texture or rendering issues.
Vignetting or (Eckenabschattung) in my language cannot be disabled...

Now the game is unplayable
In the menu it works
but then in-game
The game works if i use PROTON_USE_WINED3D11
but the performance is not good and the graphics are bugy.
I can confirm that with 4.2-9 the game is horribly unperformant.
With the PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
you can actually see the main play area but as the poster above has said its buggy and slow.
I have noted that if I launch the game with no launch options and use "Windowed Full Screen" the game is way more performant but its purple
After the release of 1.0 Proton players experience a display issue with the character model:
The whole upper body is encompassed by a sphere.
It seems to be related to the newly introduced hair styles for characters, since it changes colour along with the selected hair colour in character creation.
I can confirm the blob for a head.
Yeah blob for a head here too
Some helmets (like the cowl) get rid of this bug, while others (like a skullcap) don't. It seems to be tied to whether hair is still rendered underneath?
Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem. Main charter have big "Afro"

I play Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem in steamplay with proton 5.02 in xubuntu 18.04. All ok and great perfomance, but main charter have big brown ball around head, similary "Afro" hair style.
https://postimg.cc/WDpKGmzg
Today (after game update): adding glitch with lighting (sheaking effect) and downgrade perfomance. Afro, also, is here
Theme in Bug Tracker on steam community: https://steamcommunity.com/app/424370/discussions/1/3554966164230226665/?tscn=1581703802
I've also noticed un-equipping and re-equipping the cowl can cause it to flick back to the afro glich, do it a few times more and it flicks back to normal again
hilarious, but slightly immersion breaking
Not sure if related, but I tried to debug this "afro" issue little bit further.
I enabled more verbose in-game logging in .local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Wolcen/system.cfg
configuration file:
log_verbosity=2
log_WriteToFile=1
after which I accessed the character selection menu. I get game log entries
<13:30:11> CryAnimation: character-definition not found: objects/characters/players/male/male.cdf
<13:30:11> CryAnimation: character-definition not found: objects/characters/players/male/male.cdf

<13:30:13> CryAnimation: character-definition not found: objects/characters/umbra_player230/umbra_player230.cdf
in .local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Wolcen/game.log
.
Additionally, using Proton 5.0, I re-defined WINEDEBUG
parameters in .local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton 5.0/proton
Python script file. Added line:
self.env.setdefault("WINEDEBUG", "warn+all")
and commented out self.env.setdefault("WINEDEBUG", "+timestamp,+pid,+tid,+seh,+debugstr,+loaddll,+mscoree")
in line 432.
Once done, I enabled proton logging and added game launching parameters PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
in Steam client. This outputs log file $HOME/steam-424370.log
which contains A LOT of ntdll
warning lines referring to (missing) shader & texture files. Sample log entry:
...
0035:warn:ntdll:NtQueryFullAttributesFile L"\\??\\Z:\\home\\fincer\\.local\\share\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\Wolcen\\engine\\shaders\\cache\\d3d11\\cgpshaders\\hair@hair_motionblurpassps.fxcb" not found (c000003a)
...
:cake: for you.
Quick Question: Were the referenced files actually missing or did they just have the wrong access rights set?
As far as I can tell, I couldn't find those files on my Linux system, assuming they should locate at Wolcen's installation directory .local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Wolcen/
(+ subdirs)
Would be great if someone could confirm relevance of these findings and check whether the same issue exists on Windows.
Was going to check my setup and look if I have that particular file, and end up finding ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Wolcen/Engine/shaders.pak
in it's place instead.
Your path as lower case "engine
", while mine was named "Engine
". Tried a ln -s
but that didn't do anything.
Furthermore, any recommended tool for digging into .pak
files?
looks like sometimes .pak files are really just zip archives, might be worth a shot seeing if it's something that can be unzipped.
Quite ridiculous the bug. Haha.
Wolcen pak
files are encrypted asset archive files used by CryEngine. You may find this topic (Zenhax - Wolcen Lords of Mayhem : Decrypt .PAK archive from CryEngine) interesting if you want to pursue the unpacking procedure. I am not sure if this is the right lead, though.
Anyway.
In my case, the ntdll
"not found" log entries are always shown after entry
0035:warn:msvcrt:MSVCRT__wsopen_dispatch :failed-last error (3)
I'd still like to know if anyone could confirm that similar log entries exist on other Linux systems, since relying just to a single source (my personal log entries) is just too error-prone.
I am pretty confident this is not a DXVK issue at all since switching to WineD3D (launch option PROTON_USE_WINED3D
) makes no any difference to the character "afro blob" issue.
The "afro blob" issue seem to have something to do with missing game assets, likely due to a some failure in Wine process. I have not pinpointed the root cause.
@Fincer .. I can confirm a ton of these 0035:warn:ntdll:NtQueryFullAttributesFile
log entries in my $HOME/steam-424370.log
.
$ grep NtQueryFull steam-424370.log | wc -l
27871
The ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Wolcen/game.log
doesn't have anything else than the processor specs though.
In my logfile, the 0035:warn:msvcrt:MSVCRT__wsopen_dispatch :failed-last error (3)
is shown after the not found
entries.
It seems the initial errors are from looking for separate configuration files

Continuing to analyze the log output there seem to be 12742 unique entries (folders and files) that throw the NtQueryFullAttributesFile
error. I added the file here wolcen_unique_files.txt
Thanks @ygaeon! That confirms I am not the only one.
I get similar results, ~27000 entries:

You need to increase game logging verbosity (see my post above) to have other than processor entries in game.log
. CryEngine logging levels are listed here.
Btw. Once the verbosity is increased, are game.log
entries like CryAnimation: character-definition not found
present on Windows, too? If not, that's a good follow-up to these findings since it proves those assets are not some development left-over stuff but actually should be loaded. Personally, I can't test Wolcen on Windows since I run only Linux environments.
Additionally to Windows testing, I guess the next actual step is to find the actual root cause in Wine.
I've used the instructions given in your post above but I still don't get any output in game.log
other than processor info.
Reading through the other issue I also expanded DXVK logging. I now use PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_LOG=1 DXVK_HUD=1 DXVK_LOG_LEVEL=debug %command%
launch options in Steam.
Tried to clear my shader cache and let DXVK rebuild it .local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Wolcen/wolcen/shaders/cache

So it's failing to download the shader?
While playing as a sorceror, when i use sorcerer hood, the afro goes away. When i take it off, it's afro mode again.

Yes, those files don't actually exist. They probably are leftovers.
I managed to unpack Wolcen pak
files. It is quite trivial task, thanks to community efforts.
I played quite some time with extracted pak
files, though I still have no actual results. At first I though Wine had problems reading encrypted pak
files, thus I extracted every Wolcen CryEngine pak
file (Game
and Engine
folders) into the game folder. However, the blob head still remained.
Basically I tried to pinpoint which model/texture files are loaded for the player character, especially the 'afro blob' sphere part. CryEngine debug views & debug draw parameters _may_ help with that effort, I didn't investigate those options too much for now.
How to extract pak
files:
A. 1) Use WolcenExtractor (didn't test myself)
B. 1) Get Wolcen RSA Key Dumper, follow instructions
B. 2) Download PakDecrypt, decrypt Wolcen pak
files (PakDecrypt.exe <input-pak-file> <output-zip-file>
). Decrypted zip
files should be renamed just with pak
suffix and they can be directly used in Wolcen.
Instead of using decrypted pak
files, I still preferred extracted pak
contents with correct paths, as the game is able to read unpacked assets as well.
More tools mentioned on Reddit: Wolcen - Community tools & resources
Awesome work @Fincer and this was actually the idea I had to dig deeper into this (to extract and run without the .pak files). I was, however, stuck at finding a suitable (trustworthy) cmd line tool for linux to decrypt and extract the .pak files. Still looking ...
Those CryEngine debug views & draw parameters looks interesting. They also seems to have the same "format" as the parameters in the system.cfg
. Will try to play around with adding some debug parameters into there and see what happens.
Edit: Nope, not the same format :-)
Edit 2: Been searching for a way to bring up the developer console but I haven't had any luck. Any of you that have found out how?
Thanks for feedback @ygaeon! I think testing the game that way was worth the shot. I used Wine to run those Wolcen pak
tools, couldn't either find any Linux native ones for this moment.
I agree with you about the debug parameters. I tested them a little but with no luck. If you get them work, let us know!
It is likely that Wolcen devs may have purposefully disabled access to devmode
parameters, including direct in-game console access. That's the case in many other game titles when they're in _production_ cycle. In some games, hacking bundled DLL files may help re-enabling the access. I am not sure about CryEngine based games, though. I haven't had time to play with the Wolcen debug stuff that much and my assumptions can be wrong.
Another way to narrow down the blob head issue could be extracting all Wolcen character related asset/configuration files, try tweaking some of them, and checking in-game changes + relevant log outputs (Wine, game itself...). Of course, this option is not any better than having direct access to relevant CryEngine debug output.
Just something that crossed my mind reading the conversation here..
Can it be that the game requires a path in non case-sensative way, meaning that on windows it works as expected but on linux its not? :/
Please confirm the problem here to attract dev's attention:
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48700
After reading the latest responses in WineHQ I opted to create a bug report in The official forums. But for some reason (after several tries) my thread doesn't show up.
As it is now, I'm not playing the game due to this big-blob-annoyance...
Someone already tested the winehq patch and seems to run sufficiently well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKA-9hFy7q4
Built this yesterday for the proton version from TK-Glitch. Didn't work, game starts but hangs right before entering the main menu. Start sound was missing too. Without patching it worked.
Looks like the updated patch doesn't work indeed. The previous version worked, I'll rollback.
edit: Done, and verified to work.
Wolcen Patch 1.0.10.0:
Fixed an issue causing players to have balloons instead of heads when playing the game on Proton
Well, would be interesting if they really fixed some memory leaks or just worked around them.
Can verify that the bug is fixed.
The balloon is fixed but some fonts are still missing.
Do you try winetricks -q corefonts?
I built the proton Version from TK-glitch (community patch for wolcen) without using winetricks. All text is visible except remaining skill points if there are none left.
Yeah the remaining skill font bug was there before launch. Had it through early access as well.
No game files installed (Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem)
Issue transferred from https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3710.

Since last weel I cannot start Wolcen.
Steam tells me that the binary is missing (see first picture below), but in fact all game files - except some profile and config files - are missing.
I already tried to uninstall and reinstall the game (with and without manually deleting the undeleted game files after uninstallation and with and without a reboot between uninstallation and reinstallation; all combinations).
When I try to install the game (after I uninstalled it), the "installation" takes no time and is instant "successfully finished", but it does not create/install any file.
I also tried using a new SteamLibrary-directory somewhere else, but I get the same issue.
When I try to open the properties of that game, my Steam client crashes.
I owas able to open the properties once and validating the the gamefiles, just validated 0 of 1 file(s) and told me, the validation would have been successful.
Clearing Steam's download cache also didn't help me.
I am using Steam on Ubuntu 19.10 and until today it just worked. This is also the only game I have such an issue.
I used tried Proton 5.0-5 and 4.11-13 via the general Steam settings.
Hello @p0kR, can you go the game in your Library and click the ⓘ on the right side, and verify that it says Proton <version> selected by you for this title.
in the game details.
Your issue reads like the game has been set to use "Steam Linux Runtime" which is a compatibility tool for running Linux games on Linux, not Windows games.
Yes, of course.
Wolcen does not have any text like this.
Other games have Runs on this computer via Steam Play. Proton 5.0-5 selected by you for this title.
If I change other (Linux) games to "Steam Linux Runtime", it states Runs on this computer via Steam Play. Steam Linux Runtime selected by you for this title.
for those games, but nothing for Wolcen.

After the release of 1.0 Proton players experience a display issue with the character model:
The whole upper body is encompassed by a sphere.
It seems to be related to the newly introduced hair styles for characters, since it changes colour along with the selected hair colour in character creation.
