Played through a few chapters of Vol. 1 so far and everything is good on Arch Linux with mesa-git
Did you guys get cutscenes to work?
EDIT: Also anybody knows how to install the 18+ patches? They auto-detect NEKOPARA installations. They would work just fine if they were installed in the WINEPREFIX, but I don't know what to set as the WINEPREFIX now that they're installed in Steam Linux.
cutscenes work fine on my end. i cant help you with installing the patch since i used windows to install it.
Alright, I solved patches, but cutscenes still won't work on my end for some reason.
What are your specs / version of Linux etc?
My guess would be the driver
Edit: Do you only have the Intel HD graphics?
Hummu, I used the driver from this PPA, which was compiled from git just around 5 days ago. That PPA was linked in this PPA, which is the recommended one in PREREQS.md (I had to use that PPA since I'm still on Xenial, while the recommended one only has Bionic).
Also I managed to get cutscenes working with regular Wine, after installing wmp10 and possibly codecs too. I kinda purged out my Wine installation just recently so I'm still trying to re-install everything to see how it goes.
Ah btw, I'm on a laptop so it also has an NVIDIA GPU (GTX 960M, driver 396.54). I tried running the game with optirun but cutscenes still didn't work.
Just finished installing a fresh new wine prefix with wmp10. Cut scenes are working just fine in it, though overall performance of the game is sorta terrible when compared with Steam Play (however I can't get cut scenes to work there, so that's that).
EDIT: Just to confirm, did you build Proton by yourself from this repo, or did you use the one shipped with Steam? I'm using the one in Steam so I think I may be outdated?
i used the shipped one
Nekopara Vol 0 working on Debian 10.
My Specs: Distro Debian 10
Driver: NVIDIA Corporation GeForce GTX 1070 Ti/PCIe/SSE2
Driver Version: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 390.77
Installed everything from Debian repository or default, I have not added any extra config or parameter.
Here is the link to my Steam system info:

Eh, I guess the only other concern that I have left is gstreamer? I just checked and the ones for xenial are outdated when compared with the ones for bionic (I don't know about arch and debian however).
EDIT: Arch has more or less the same version with bionic.
EDIT 2: Debian 10 (buster) too, it seems.
EDIT 3: Disclaimer: gstreamer for xenial are generally 1.8.3, and the ones for bionic/arch/buster are generally 1.14.2.
EDIT 4: I'll try installing gstreamer from source.
EDIT 5: Installed gstreamer 1.14.2 from source. No improvements whatsoever. I give up, this is beyond me.
Hi,
I'm doing some research for my issue at number 1464. That issue deals with cinematic/video playback. Most of the listed games already have a proton log attached to their issue, but this game does not.
Could somebody be so kind as to upload a proton log from a clean install?
I need to search in the proton log for mentions of MF or quartz, so that I can categorize the game.
Thanks for the help!
HonkingGoose
@HonkingGoose steam-333600.log
@BobbyWibowo Thank you for the log. :+1:
@HonkingGoose For some reason I completely forgot this issue was for the whole Nekopara series, so I only ended up sending log for vol 1.
vol 0: steam-385800.log
vol 2: steam-420110.log
vol 3: steam-602520.log
Also not sure about used codecs. I used the menu to watch cutscenes in vol 1 & 2, while they completely didn't work, I couldn't really find any relevant error messages in the log files other than some mentions of quartz.dll.
Recently, for some reason, the game built-in fonts for all of the Nekopara games stopped working for me. They all fallback to the system fugly fonts. I've got LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command% set as my launch options, using Proton 4.2-4. Any ideas? Back then using that as the launch options was all it took to fix the fonts.
EDIT: I tried LC_ALL=ja_JP.utf8 as well, cause that's the one being listed on my locale -a, but no luck.
Oh I see, after this commit https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/commit/2ae0d898eb1d6279cc705307a459f920bc7c921e we're supposed to use HOST_LC_ALL=ja_JP.utf8 %command% to override it now.
I think. I don't really get it. All I can understand is that it will get rid of LC_ALL otherwise.
For the record, I found that Nekopara Extra won't work with Proton 5.0-3. It just shows a black window and gets closed. But when I force to use Proton 4.11-12 it works well. I checked the log file but nothing special.
Hello @GroverChouT, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options, try the game with Proton 5.0, and drag and drop the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log into the comment box.
Separately, can you check if setting the game's launch options to PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% has an effect?
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% works well, thanks a lot!
Here is the log with PROTON_LOG=1 %command%: steam-899970.log
There's a system config issue here with running vulkan on your system. From the log:
info: Required Vulkan extension VK_KHR_surface not supported
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'dxvk::DxvkError'
Please copy your system information from Steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.
Here: steam-system-info.txt
Thanks, the s-r-t-info output tells us you have 64 bit vulkan drivers installed, but not 32 bit vulkan drivers. Please verify you have the libvulkan_radeon-32bit package installed.
Very helpful. I didn't realize this, I will add it on the openSUSE wiki. :)
Can confirm the new wmp11 winetricks verb is working well for video cutscenes playback (https://github.com/Winetricks/winetricks/pull/1489). No need for other verbs such as quartz. Just wmp11 alone. I've tested it working with all 3 volumes other than Vol. 0 and Extra (AFAIK, Vol. 0 doesn't have video cutscenes).
However, I notice graphical regression with Proton 5.0-5. The Direct3D E-mote (live2d of the girls) will not appear, or sometimes appear as semi-transparent.
This issue does not occur with Proton 4.11-3.
Hello @BobbyWibowo, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options and drag and drop the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log into the comment box.
Separately, please test if PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% has an effect. Was there graphical issues with earlier patch versions of Proton 5.0?
@kisak-valve
Clean Proton 5.0-5 prefix (graphical issues occur): steam-333600.log
Clean Proton 5.0-5 prefix with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 (graphical issues do NOT occur): steam-333600.log
Unfortunately I'm unable to confirm whether the issues occurred in earlier versions of Proton 5.0 as 5.0-5 was the first 5.0 version I launched with this game.
Can you guys play the opening and ending movies? I'm using Proton 4.11-13 with wmp11 (and windowscodecs) installed. Cutscenes work but OP/ED don't play.

They should work with Proton 4.11-13 and wmp11. I did not manually install windowscodecs, however I wasn't aware if installing wmp11 would already install that as well as a dependency of some sort.
Anyway, cutscenes would already work without wmp11 (i.e. out of the box). OP/ED vids would then work with wmp11.
Hmmm... Just purged the compatdata and started a new one from scratch. The stubborn OP/ED movies still refused to play lol.
I'm using nvidia proprietary driver on Arch Linux. Same issue happens to a small box with an Intel Celeron CPU (integrated Graphics 600) which is also on Arch Linux. Are there any particular packages I should install/avoid?
OP and ED videos for Vol. 1 don't play for me on Proton 4.11-13 or 5.0-7. I haven't tried the other games yet. I've also installed the wmp11 winetricks verb. Running on Arch Linux w/ Ryzen 3700X/5700XT and Mesa 20.0.7
Using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 doesn't fix this issue either, using 4.11-13 or 5.0-7. The recent GloriousEggroll releases with the Media Foundation patches don't fix the issue, 5.8-GE-1 or 5.8-GE-2. I've tried these versions with and without the above launch option.
Hi @kisak-valve,
Would it be possible to remove the DXVK/D3D9 label? The issue has been reported and fixed upstream (see doitsujin/dxvk#1647) and is available in Proton 5.13-1.
