Windows build number: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.18363.836]
PowerToys version: 0.17
PowerToy module for which you are reporting the bug (if applicable): N/A
On my work PC, PowerToys prompted me that an update was available. On my personal machine, and my wife's, I received no such notification, and Check For Updates just takes me to the download page.
A pop-up to update to version 0.18
No pop-up to update to version 0.18.
Yes, I also got the notification in the Windows bar on the right side.
Then I click on the message and it went away.
Now I still have 0.17 and must manuallyinstall 0.18 from github.
I found that to get the popup to show, I needed to close powertoys and reopen it. Then it seemed to download it first then prompt me to install, which meant that there was a considerable delay between opening it and it prompting me in the 1 to 2 minutes range. I would prefer if it prompted me if it found an update, then downloaded it.
I also only got the notification in the Windows notification area.
PowerToys version: 0.17

the auto-update process is still not bullet proof (as you have experienced), and we will make improvements over the next few releases.
Note that is you are on a metered connection, the auto-update will not download the installer but it will only offer to visit the github page.
Also the current "Check of updates" button in the general settings will be improved to not just redirect to the github page but to provide complete information and offer to download the installer automatically.
The auto-update currently checks for updates every 24 hours, that may also change in future releases.

The more helpful check for updates button would be very handy to maybe initialize a manual check instead of reducing the auto-check time. The people who would want it in under 24 hours are the ones who will manually check.
@hasmar04
yes sure.

Please note, I am not on a metered connection (and Windows doesn't think it's metered).
@gavinayling
thanks for the info.
In 0.19 we have work planned to make it more robust.
Thanks for the update @enricogior!
I'm also on an unmetered connection and haven't told Windows anything different.
I'm aware that the update process will be improved. I just wanted to add, that I am not on a metered connection (like gavinayling) and metered connection setting in windows is disabled. 👍
@drghughes @naobug
thank you for the info.
Thank you for respecting the metered connection settings, looking forward to v0.19 improvements!
