Powertoys: Provide PowerToys as chocolatey package

Created on 17 May 2019  路  10Comments  路  Source: microsoft/PowerToys

Currently, the only way to install PowerToys is through "classical" windows install. It would be way easier to have it maintained up-to-date to have it available as chocolatey package

I would say take it a step further and make it a windows feature just like Hyper-v and other windows features. Then for users of the SCCM world could easily manage it also.

While offering PowerToys as a Windows feature sounds good, the QA and other requirements that would surround that probably makes that untenable. However, offering both store and chocolatey distribution for the Win10 PowerToys would be absolutely awesome.

@coldacid I do understand that, but they do have other services that are constantly being updated and worked on. I could see this as being a store install or an MSI to which can be used by chocolatey but nothing specific for Chocolatey.

IF it was a feature I would be curious how much QA would be needed.

Using Windows Features would make it part of the Windows release life-cycle which is every 6 months and seems to be moving to once a year. This should not be part of that.

We definitely want to get this into Chocolatey once a preview with setup is ready this Summer. I also agree that shipping this as part of Windows would dramatically slow down the ability to make rapid updates. Although maybe if we shipping something like Chocolatey in Windows...

I would also be interested in this, probably would be limited to win 10 Pro/Enterprise, but still would be nice. Be curious of what Microsoft would have to do for that to become a reality.

Regardless of using Chocolatey or Store please consider offering .msix installer instead of MSI. Clean installation/uninstall is really important for some of us and side-loading of msix is first-class on reasonably recent Win10.

Your installer toolchain should support it too.

@petrroll
we are going to offer the .msix as well.

@enricogior if you do, please let me know I need to change things in the package as well.
