Postgres: "received fast shutdown request" error message

Created on 21 Oct 2015  Â·  7Comments  Â·  Source: docker-library/postgres

Hi guys,
I'd like to deploy a PostgreSQL server as part of a larger set of Docker containers and selected version 9.4.5 for this.

Using a vanilla container yields the following error log:

$ docker run --name mypostgres --detach postgres:9.4.5
$ docker logs mypostgres
The files belonging to this database system will be owned by user "postgres".
This user must also own the server process.

The database cluster will be initialized with locale "en_US.utf8".
The default database encoding has accordingly been set to "UTF8".
The default text search configuration will be set to "english".

Data page checksums are disabled.

You can change this by editing pg_hba.conf or using the option -A, or
--auth-local and --auth-host, the next time you run initdb.

Success. You can now start the database server using:

    postgres -D /var/lib/postgresql/data
or
    pg_ctl -D /var/lib/postgresql/data -l logfile start

Any idea why the database server shuts itself down? For information I'm on a Mac (OSX 10.10.5) with Docker version 1.8.2. Here are more details:

$ docker version
Client:
 Version: 1.8.2
 API version: 1.20
 Go version: go1.4.2
 Git commit: 0a8c2e3
 Built: Thu Sep 10 19:10:10 UTC 2015
 OS/Arch: darwin/amd64

Server:
 Version: 1.8.3
 API version: 1.20
 Go version: go1.4.2
 Git commit: f4bf5c7
 Built: Mon Oct 12 18:01:15 UTC 2015
 OS/Arch: linux/amd64

Note that providing a password (using -e POSTGRES_PASSWORD=xxx) doesn't change the outcome.

Best,
Aurelien

Out of curiosity I tried the very same commands but with the postgres:9.5 container. I get a very similar outcome:

The files belonging to this database system will be owned by user "postgres".

The database cluster will be initialized with locale "en_US.utf8".
The default database encoding has accordingly been set to "UTF8".

The starting and stopping of the server is normal. This allows the entrypoint script to: start the sql server listening only on the unix socket; create initial users, databases, and passwords; and run shell scripts and import sql files from /docker-entrypoint-initdb.d/. After those are finished, it stops the backgrounded sql server, and then replaces itself with a new sql server process listening on the tcp socket.

@yosifkit, thanks for the answer. Obviously I haven't really understood how the dockerized version of PostgreSQL works. Is there something that need to be done to launch the server within the container? Even after mapping the 5432 port to the host I can't access it with (host-installed) psql.

On a Mac, you have to connect to the VM ip address rather than localhost. I think docker-machine ip default should get you the address. You'll still need to map the port as that will map it from the container to the linux host so that you can access it from the Mac.

Thanks! I didn't realize that I had to deal with this extra layer.

Hello, @yosifkit !
Is this log also normal?
