using PnP PowerShell 2.21.1712.2 for SP2016

If SharePoint on-premises, what's exact CU version: 16.0.4327.1000

Expected or Desired Behavior

Apply-ProvisioningTemplate should work.

Observed Behavior

When applying a template on SP2016 I'm getting
Template is not valid: The required attribute 'Zone' is missing.

Steps to Reproduce

Get a template and then apply it with Apply-ProvisioningTemplate

This is indeed SP2016 issue due CSOM limitations on getting ZoneId for the web parts. That API, unfortunately, is missing from the SP2016 CSOM - it exists in SP2013, but was missed to get backported also to SP2016. We are working on addressing this gap in SP engineering sooner or later.

My base template is "SPS#0" and the web parts don't have a Zone. The same also happens for
BLANKINTERNET#0.

Sites with the template STS#0 work fine.

I think if you use the <pnp:WebPart inside a <pnp:File zone is required.
If you use the <pnp:WebPart inside a <pnp:Page it doesn't exist.

@Pieter-Veenstra any change you could share the template or minimized version of that so that we can reuse it for testing - without repro, it's really hard to figure out what's happening and our daily automated tests are working fine in SP2016. You can for example strip all extra stuff and only leave the page elements which have the issue. Thx.

I believe this happens when you put a webpart in a rich text field or page content instead of in a Webpart zone.

Also, the Composed Looks did not get exported, even though custom color and font files have been deployed and selected on the Composed Looks configuration screen.

@VesaJuvonen I wonder if this is a SharePoint 2016 issue only as I can't reproduce this in SharePoint Online. @ruslanurban 's template is similar to mine.

This is indeed SP2016 issue due CSOM limitations on getting ZoneId for the web parts. That API, unfortunately, is missing from the SP2016 CSOM - it exists in SP2013, but was missed to get backported also to SP2016. We are working on addressing this gap in SP engineering sooner or later.

Yes you can work around the issue ok, It just requires a quick manual edit on your XML template. Find your WebPart XML section and just add the “Zone=”Header” such as below,

You will need to do it for each Web Part and check your Zones are correct in the layout your using. I’ve just had to do it to four web part’s exported as part of the home page which is how I found this issue. But the workaround works ok until the export/api supports it.
