Hi @gautamig54 I have opened an issue for dashboard.
Thanks !!!

Hi @CleverFool77! So this is the final design for the dashboard?
Should we add the link to add wikis or question in the sidebar. It looks empty below the map. What do you think?

I'm not sure whether this is the final design ? Did we had some changes after this ? I do not seem to remember ?

Hi @gautamig54 @jywarren Is there any modification to this design ?
If not, then I'll start with this design only.
Thanks !!

Hi @CleverFool77! Let's start with design for now. Any modifications in the design can be take care of later.

Before that. I guess some of your parts are left in Questions, profile
section and other section. We need to look into them too.

Yes. I am working on them too. Will try to finish them in the weekend.

Cool. Till that time, I'm trying to find the bugs in the new design that we have implemented till now and making new issues or fix for it.
Thanks !!

Hi @CleverFool77!
On what part are you working on?
I feel the dashboard design seem a bit incomplete. In the present design there are a lot of features added and here it seem to be missing?
What do you think?

Exactly, There are missing up but as we'll gradually start building up the
pages, we'll try adding them too.

Hi @CleverFool77! I am implementing the dashboard as per the new design. I'll add the map and the tag cards

You can add map part but about cards part I wanted to discuss something.

After this discussion, you might add it.

Our current dashboard shows recent questions, notes, answers etc
But I noticed that new part shows it on the basis of tags, so we won't get recent information. And it will be lost.
Plus in cards, we are just adding notes for now, then what about questions and answers and other stuff. Won't it decease the reach of question as we'll only see most liked one or on the basis of most used tags as per the new the dashboard.

What if we don't use those of too popular tags in our note or questions, does that mean we can never see them? As we won't go that profile page specifically who posted it unless we know about that post.

Even if we do have tha tag cards on the basis of recent tags we use, then if I've added ten tags in notes, then it will Show all the ten tag cards with same note taking lots of space. As we cannot specifically choose right? That which tag out of all these ten should be used.

Can we Consider a design having recent parts too like current design and not doing it as per tag cards?

Doing it on the basis of tags look good for profile section and tags section but not dashboard according to me.

Cc : @jywarren @gauravano

Maybe we can discuss it here only on comment section or in Opencall too ?

Hmm, @CleverFool77 can you give link of the complete dashboard design? And, yeah, it makes sense that we should show all the data - notes, questions, etc. Also, you'll build dashboard on shadow page right?

Hi @gauravano The design present is the Issue is the one that we have found.
It looks incomplete and has some data being missing.

regarding Shadow Page ? I'm not sure. I though for dashbord, We'll build it first then merge. So We'll follow what Jeff said for profile page. Trying to complete most of it and then only merge.

Hi @gautamig54 we should a proper discussion regarding dashboard today at openhour call.
I'm travelling, so not sure whether I'll come todao or not. But I'll try attending it.
If I'm not there, it would be great if you can start it.
We should have major discussions regarding new design as I mentioned above.

Cc : @jywarren @gauravano

I totally agree with all of this. @CleverFool77 I texted you in gitter regarding the same. We can have a discussion whenever you're free. I will discuss the design modifications with @gauravano and @ebarry today at the open call.

Also, I think it is better if we create the dashboard on the shadow page.

Hi @gautamig54 @jywarren
Can I know what has been decided for future prospect of dashboard design?

Hi, this is complex, and thanks for bringing it up. Just as one simple way
forward, let me confirm that the tag cards each show recent posts under
that tag? And if so, then the issue might be a post appearing repeatedly
under multiple tags? If that is the main issue, can we not think of a way
to prevent a single node from appearing multiple times on a page? We could
pass a list of "already shown nids" into each successive tag card, using a
view helper, perhaps?

Are there other concerns that the tag cards present, or would the above
address the major concern? Thank you!

Hi @jywarren This would b ok with notes !! But what about recent comments ?
Is that data lost ?

On the sidebar, we also latest and recently edited or added wikis. Those would be lost too ?

I see. I guess the advantages conceptually of organizing by topic "forum"
(i.e. topic cards) is so great that I'm inclined to try to fit the extra
needs (showing comments, wikis) into that framework. Wikis I'm less worried
about as most activity I think relevant to most users is notes/questions
and comments. But comments, yeah. It's a good point.

Looking at the tag cards, can you see a natural place we might add
comments? The easiest would be to have "99 more posts" change to "99 posts
| 24 comments" or something, although we don't actually have a view of
"comments in a topic/tag", so that's a little complex. But secondly, isn't
what we're looking for a "quick glance" of recent comments, rather than a
link to a full list of them?

Would it be a problem if we only showed comments on recent posts?

In any case, I think we can do a short term solution by linking from the
dashboard to the https://publiclab.org/comments page, and not let this
question block design progress. But I'd love to hear any creative ideas you
have to resolving it!

Hi Jeff.
But then how would we get to know whether its comment or post on notes.
How would we differentiate.

Besides comments are huge sometimes, so you wanna cut it to some words? As
unlike notes title, it's not small to fit completely in cards.

Yes, i agree. My initial reaction is to not show comment text at all on tag
cards. My second idea might be to show both notes and comments mixed
together, but with comments using a "comment" icon instead of the circle
with lead image, as notes do. If we did that second idea, we would have to
truncate the comments to something reasonable, like 100 chars maybe.

Hi Jeff.
When we click on more posts, we tend to go to notes part of that individual
tags page. Or when we click on more questions part. We do the same. But how
this should be dealt in comment parts?. We don't have specific comments
section, as they are associated with notes.
And we can't click like more comments for this.
Or should we add something for comments part?

Perhaps the easiest solution really is to make a new page at, i.e.,
https://publiclab.org/comments/tag/spectrometry to match
https://publiclab.org/wiki/tag/spectrometry etc. I had thought this was too
big a project, but our other design ideas for comments on tag cards seem
too complicated to work well, so maybe we really should show "151 posts |
352 comments" at the bottom left of each tag card?

This seems better solution.
The link you told us for comments on that particular tag could be used.

Thanks !!

Looking at the tag cards, can you see a natural place we might add

Would it be a problem if we only showed comments on recent posts?

In any case, I think we can do a short term solution by linking

mentioned card here.

Hi Gautami. If you have any idea about maps? Then can you explain it a bit.

No we will be building the dashboard page, like we did for profile. We'll
try to complete most of it and build it in one branch.
And later we'll fix small bugs and changes.
What do you say?

I guess we just have to integrate the map here. I has all the location of all the people pinned.
There was certain issue with the map due to which certain test cases were failing. I mentioned that to @gauravano in the open call as well.

I am starting with the dashboard since all my other PRs are under review.

This is cool!

Hi @gautamig54 is there any update over the page? Can I have bit idea of what part you are covering? So that I can work on other parts?

It seems like we're doing pretty well in #6229, actually!

image

OK, this isn't finalized, but we worked through some options and are considering this as the latest. More design work required before we move forward!

image

Is this issue still need some help? @CleverFool77 @jywarren @gautamig54

OK! discussing this, let's be sure we have good mobile view mockups for this and then we'll make a to-do list! @NitinBhasneria yes we'd love help with it!

Just looking at this for the first time, this is AWESOME โœจ

My only question right now is what's the responsive / flex / collapse plan for these different elements on mobile devices? Are there existing mockups to that that I'm just not seeing?

(also, I think it's cool in the short-term if it doesn't meet the collapse conventions on the rest of the site if we think we want to do something different here and try it other places later :) )

๐Ÿ’ก-- I use this a lot and wanted to share with whoever is working if they haven't tried it in Chrome devtools :) You can simulate a view of any webapp you're working on on popular mobile devices. https://developers.google.com/web/tools/chrome-devtools/device-mode#device

OK, here is a rough mobile view of the dashboard:

image

Notes:

  • offer more topics to follow at bottom if you have <3 or so topics, with an explanatory notice You're following only 3 topics; select more from the featured topics below.
  • collapse the Follow more topics menu at the top

I think this means we are ready to start making our more complete to-do list! And we can start by rebasing #6229!
