All good!
pipenv install notebook
pipenv update --dry-run
Can confirm. Locking works fine, but updating does not.
Just gave this a try and couldn't reproduce.
> pip list --format=legacy| grep notebook
notebook (5.0.0)
> pipenv update --dry-run

notebook==5.4.0 is available (5.0.0 installed)!
I think I am hitting a very similar issue:

(this is on ubuntu 16.04)
so the virtualenv is a python 3.5 virtualenv. however, pipenv was installed under python 2.7 (globally on the machine /usr/local/bin/pipenv
) so when it runs it runs under python 2.7
when it calls to get a list of Django version it doesn't get Django 2.x which is python 3 only.
@asherf you have a dependency resolution issue. If you install pipenv with python 2, it will never be able to resolve python 3 dependencies properly (currently). Your issue is not related to this one, but is related to #857. For now, please run:
$ pip uninstall pipenv
$ pip3 install pipenv
Or install pipenv with the --user
flag rather than at the system level (which is not a recommended practice) and add ~/.local/bin
to your path
