Omim: Provide some button to switch geolocation on/off manually

Very often I use MapsMe indoors (without 3G or Wi-Fi), so geolocation would not work. At all. Never.

Several months ago (and several months before and before and it seems just from the beginning) there was very nice switch: geolocation on/off. So when I didn't need it, I could switch it off, and when I need it again, I could switch it back on.

But current version (like some previous) doesn't provide an option to switch geolocation off. So it continuously try to get the GPS coordinates.

I can see because of that icon in the system tray even if using GPS for location source was switched off in the phone settings.
It keeps trying again and again and again and consumes my battery until I close app. Than geolocation service icon disappears.

So could you return that switch back
or create some other mechanism for it
or at least force the app to respect OS settings?

That is strange. Did you switch off just GPS or all location providers?

In the second case application will pop-up a suggestion which you can close and this flag (user do not like to use geolocation for now) will be saved until a next cold start.

In the first scenario, though, application will use Google's location service. Which is not so battery consuming, but if you'd like you can switch off "Google Play Services" located in the application ( Settings->Miscellaneous).

Option one. GPS off, wi-fi and mobile networks on.

I've got two phones, one running android 6.0, another 4.1.2. I checked and found out that this annoying pop-up (#4014) shows up only in first one (6.0), but I've never seen it on the second (4.1.2).

Maybe it related with permissions mechanism, but I haven't android 5.0 to confirm it.

Option "Google Play Services" seems to has no affect the discussed behavior — app is still trying to get GPS — whether it switched on or off.

Has nothing to do with phone settings.

As stated in my issue that one over there, there's a good use case for not having the map following the current location: preparation for a holiday!

And turning location off in the phone settings is too much. I do want other apps to be able to use location, I just don't want it in Maps.me all the time. And I certainly don't want the map to "fly home" arbitrarily, presumably whenever it gets a fix again when there's intermittent signal.

@burivuh the popup also is annoying. It keeps popping up, whenever you go to another screen( i.e. settings, download maps ... when return to main map it pops up again).
A setting to switch it off, as before, would be great.

I say revert it back to how it was in 6.0 h a tristate location button. Problem solved.

Why does Maps.me enable geolocation despite the system settings? No other app dares do so.

And after launching Maps.me geolocation logo showed up in system tray (and disappears after closing the app).

If I switch GPS checkbox on and off, service stops and logo disappears immediately.

@thany It looks a little bit odd to demand features which go against majority of MAPS.ME users and focus strategy. The code is open, you can always fork it and made your own map, I'm just saying.

@ForkWithMe This is not a feature request, this is a bug report. This problem didn't exist in version 6.0 and earlier, when the location button was still a tristate button, so location following could easily be disabled.

I'm demanding to fix a bug, and given MAPS.ME's commercial nature, that's not a strange thing to do.

For what it's worth, asking nicely hasn't worked in the past 9 months that this bug has existed.

I would also love an option in maps.me to temporarily switch off gps.

My scenario: I start the app and do a gps locating, to show my current location. Until here everything is fine. Then I start walking arround. I would love to hold the app open, to have a look to it from time to time. But when doing so, maps.me is killing my batterie while updating the gps location. At this point it would be perfect, to have any option to disable the gps temporarily.

For me to options could solve my problem:

1. An option, that a tapp on gps only does a single gps location and stopps afterwards.
2. An option, to switch off gps manually. For example by dopple tapping the gps button (my favorite).

Are the any plans to implement a feature like this?

Still not fixed with the latest version.

I've said it before and I will say it again, because this is the only solution and it works perfectly fine: A TRISTATE BUTTON.
