Officedocs-skypeforbusiness: Teams chat data in meetings

Created on 15 Jul 2020  Â·  9Comments  Â·  Source: MicrosoftDocs/OfficeDocs-SkypeForBusiness

Thank you for this great article! Can you please add a section to provide more information around meetings chat messages? I know the answer is:

  • If the meeting was created in a channel then the chat will occur in the channel. The compliance records sit in the group mailbox.
  • If the meeting was not created in a channel then the chat will occur in the 1:1 chats area. The compliance records are stored in each user's mailbox.

I get a lot of questions about this distinction and pointing people to this article doesn't answer their question. The difference is important for retention purposes.

Thank you!

@EricaToelle Thank you for submitting feedback and contributing to the docs. We are currently investigating this.

@EricaToelle Thank you for reaching out. Is this link helpful - https://docs.microsoft.com/microsoftteams/retention-policies Please let me know if I should add it to the article.

My suggested addition is to state where information from different types of meetings is stored. The linked page doesn't include any information about where different types of meeting are stored, so it doesn't help. Also, retention is only one of many reasons you might want to know where Teams meeting chats are stored. The location of Teams data is a seperate but related topic to retention.

@MicrosoftHeidi Please assist.

I've pinged the article owners to see what their thoughts are.

@MicrosoftHeidi Hi Heidi, any updates on this?

HI all, with the announcement of retention for meeting recordings, this issue has become more important. If the meeting was scheduled from a channel, the recording will be stored in SharePoint. If it is scheduled from Outlook it will be stored in the user's OneDrive. Customers need to understand the actual location of this data for eDiscovery, retention, etc.

Can you please update the article to explain where Teams meeting data is stored? Thank you!

@MicrosoftHeidi Hi Heidi, any updates on this yet?

Hi, sorry for any delay, I think we have some relevant storage updates we should be able to link to, and I'm going to look into that this week.
