Additional information

I'm on a potentially weird OS but in general all ubuntu packages tend to work. I understand if this is considered an unsupported environment but I was curious if there were recommended steps to debugging this sort of failure so I could investigate on my own even if this ought to be closed.

Looks to be an issue with your x config, but I don't know how to resolve it offhand.

(in the event that google puts anyone here: it was solidly PEBCAC and my nvidia drivers had been updated without my noticing; a restart made everything ok.
