The program does not show up in the selectable defaults list in either the "Settings" or "Control Panel".
Hey! Thanks for checking out N1—we'll need to do some digging and figure out how to fix this. Pull requests welcome if you want to investigate!
This is shipping in 0.4.4 this weekend and should hit the auto-updaters soon. Enjoy!
awesome work! thanks! :D
Looks like this isn't feature isn't working just yet. Can this be reopened?
Same here, I cannot see N1 in the list.
Same, no Nylas in the default apps list under Email.

Hi, yes it looks like it's not yet available from the default app chooser. I'm going to re-open this while we diagnose ongoing issues with setting N1 as the default app.
i also got the problem, i cant even open mails from chrome with mailto://
is there a workaround?
Looks like there are ways to do it here: http://stackoverflow.com/a/3940472/83853
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd203067(v=vs.85).aspx
Any progress on this? The stackoverflow comment linked by @grinich combined with launch arguments (if that's how it is passed with mailto:// and other contextual actions) seems like the way to go.
It looks like this is the approach taken by Electron in https://github.com/electron/electron/blob/702352804239f58e5abcd0b96dbd748b68ab0278/atom/browser/browser_win.cc#L176, so we can switch to calling SetAsDefaultProtocolClient and get this functionality (and also delete our Mac / Linux code for doing it.) Unfortunately, we are currently blocked on the lack of a way to query the status, but the MSFT folks are on it: https://github.com/electron/electron/issues/5164
Almost there: electron/electron#5302
https://github.com/electron/electron/pull/5302 merged. 🎆 Maybe you guys can give it a try?
Released as Electron v0.37.8
Thanks for the contribution @ritazh! That should definitely unblock us, and I think we can delete the code we were using for Mac and Linux as well. We're on Electron 0.37.7, but bumping to 0.37.8 should be fine as well. ETA <1 week to release. Thanks!
Any news about that?
I have actually been pushing clients to switch to Nylas (paid) from some of their older clients like Thunderbird when I switch them over to Google Apps for Work.
One of the biggest things they like is essentially that they can set Thunderbird as their default mail app. I assured them that it was possible with Nylas, but now that I am researching it I am sick to my stomach. Feel like this is a pretty integral piece of the puzzle.. Does anyone know a fix, even a work-around for this yet?
Any progress on this? This along with #886 are showstopping bugs for me. I downloaded N1 just today to test it as a potential replacement for the aging (but still trusty) Opera mail and these two bugs were immediately evident.
This is the only thing preventing me from being able to switch over 2 of my clients over to Nylas full-time from Thunderbird. This is seriously a big deal to some people - really needs to be fixed ASAP.
If this is fixed in a timely manner, I will be setting up 2 people who will be paying monthly to your service. As an IT Consultant, I need a solid email service to recommend to clients who don't want to use the web interface and this is so close to being the perfect solution. Please get this aspect of it working :/
Yes, would be great to get this fixed :)

Is this still blocked-on-electron as the tag indicates? Any progress?
What's the status? Been quite some time now.
yes, please. Have a few clients that feel a tad bit slighted as I told them it should be coming soon. Definitely does not reflect well on me.

This has landed and will ship in the next beta. If you're interested in trying it out, you can put yourself on the beta channel by going to Preferences > General. It should hit a stable release within the next week or so.

Hey folks - this has shipped in 0.4.59. You can follow the instructions here to make N1 the default mail client after upgrading to the latest release! https://support.nylas.com/hc/en-us/articles/229277648
