I can reproduce by enabling the Select CodeMirror Keymap nbextension and selecting Sublime keymap from the Edit menu.
Hack to disable it : rename the search folder to search.back in your python2.7/site-packages/notebook/static/components/codemirror/addon

or comment out

"codemirror/addon/search/searchcursor",
"codemirror/addon/search/search",

In [env]/share/jupyter/nbextensions/select_keymap/main.js

Do you have sublime keybindings?

I've seen it sometimes too, I think if I hit Ctrl-F while in edit mode. I've never actually wanted it, and I'd be happy if we disabled it - though I'm sure someone would be unhappy.

Due to focus/keybinding stuff, when I've seen it it doesn't work at all, so I doubt anyone would miss it (some might wish it actually worked, though).

I don't think so, and yes it does not work.

I couldn't easily reproduce this. @Carreau do you still see it?
