I have tried to package it in the past but couldn't come up with a clean solution. Matlab is certainly a difficult program to package. I would be happy to review a PR if someone comes up with a workable solution.

I don't think this would ever be added to nixpkgs since there aren't any publicly available downloads and even the trial version requires registering an account.

I could be packaged with a requirement to prefetch the installation zip file, like its done for the displaylink package

There are several problems with Matlab:

  • It needs to run an installer that pulls content online (won't work in a sandboxed derivation)
  • An activation key or login credentials are required during the installation (that makes the derivation impure).
  • Depending on which toolboxes are installed you may need different dependencies. Given the amount of toolboxes available makes it a very complex issue.

I am using an installed and activated version, that lives outside the nix store. This method works for me but is not a viable solution for inclusion in nixpkgs.

Thank you for your contributions.

If this is still important to you, we ask that you leave a comment below. Your comment can be as simple as "still important to me". This lets people see that at least one person still cares about this. Someone will have to do this at most twice a year if there is no other activity.
Here are suggestions that might help resolve this more quickly:

  1. Search for maintainers and people that previously touched the
related code and @ mention them in a comment.
  2. Ask on the NixOS Discourse. 3. Ask on the #nixos channel on
    irc.freenode.net.
