@FRidh that works fabulously - i believe the steam package does not warn of the missing settings

is there a reasonable way to make the wrapper error out or the build ?

I don't think it can be a Nix assert, since we won't be able to check for hardware.driSupport32Bit on non-NixOS systems. So we would have to add a check during the build but at the beginning. @abbradar would know

Yes, we could wrapProgram it to add such a check for that path and barf with a somewhat useful message. good-first-bug

I'll keep it for some time in case some newcomer wants to tackle this (should be simple, indeed!). If nobody pickups this I'll do myself someday.

@RonnyPfannschmidt You'd need an application that you can run to test if 32-bit OpenGL works. I think you can use pkgsi686Linux.glxinfo.

With that you can write a wrapper script around steam that:
1) Runs glxinfo 2>/dev/null and checks its exit code;
2) Prints a good error message and exits if glxinfo failed;
3) execs Steam.

Place this to runScript in Steam's chrootenv.nix (use writeScript).
