Mysql: Current releases throws buffer overflow with disabled native AIO mode

The current releases:

• 5.6 (5.6.34)
• 5.7 (5.7.16)

throws buffer overflow exception when innodb-use-native-aio = 0 is configured and a client connects.

The versions 5.6.33 and 5.7.15 works.

I couldn't reproduce the error with any of the above, using both a basic docker-compose environment with WordPress + mysql, and an existing project where the issue had occurred.

Here are some details from one of our team members who ran into this issue about a week ago (12/01/17):
With docker 1.13.0-rc5, mysql:latest:

After getting the above they tried mysql:5.6 with the same issue. They also tried downgrading to docker 1.11.2 and 1.12.0, both of which didn't work. Using mysql:5.5 worked fine.

I asked them to try again today with mysql:latest and it is working fine.

Thanks for the info. It's difficult to do anything about it if we can't reproduce. Any differences in config, system resources etc. between the systems that could and couldn't reproduce the issue?

I've been able to reproduce this.

A buffer overflow occurs when:

• You use mysql:5.7.16 or mysql:5.7.17
• You map a nonexistent/empty folder to /etc/mysql/conf.d
• Your docker-compose project has a long name
• And you connect to mysql.

If one of the above isn't true (e.g. you don't map the volume, or you do but your project has a short name) then the buffer overflow doesn't occur.

Note that I haven't tested 5.6 as per the OP, but it could probably be reproduced in the same way.

The above example doesn't trigger for short project names, and I'm not sure of the exact cutoff as compose adds additional characters when generating the final container name.
hostname returns the short container ID, but maybe the container name is causing issues in some other way. (Possibly related? https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=82596)

The content that is lost from mapping an empty folder to /etc/mysql/conf.d is:

Looking at @pschirch's post, I don't know whether he was mapping an empty folder to /etc/mysql/conf.d, or if he is using docker-compose with a long project name. However the trace generated seems to be the same.

As you say, this looks a lot like upstream bug 82596 (which also requires disabling the same options you disable when you remap conf.d/)

I think I have the wrong version of compose, as it complains about the .yml file.
I can reproduce 82596 easily enough, though, just using a standard 5.7.17 server image.
Something you can test: When logging in with a project name that is short enough it doesn't crash, can you run the "status" command? Particularly check what it says for "current user:"

Got it working with a newer compose
Changed index.php to give the wrong password, and for the 5.7.17 with the skip-cache settings disabled:

Without the volume it's just [email protected]
So yeah, this is the same bug. Could you add a comment to the bug (to show it's affecting multiple people), please?

For the Docker image I don't think is a bug, since there's not much to do aside from what we already do with the skip-settings

Sorry I should have mentioned - the example works with compose 1.7 and upwards.

IMO the options added to docker.cnf seem to be pretty sane. Instead of encouraging users to override /etc/mysql/conf.d in the docs (which is included first by my.cnf), it might be worthwhile to instead encourage them to use /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/ (which is included last), or structure the configuration in some other way so that the options can still be overriden by a custom config but not so easily wiped out.

A problem with some of these options is that they don't take values, so you can't override them with a second .cnf file saying skip-name-resolve=0 or similar (I think skip-name-resolve is mentioned as an example in another issue in docker-library/mysql).
So for now the only way to override these default settings is by replacing docker.cnf

We were affected by this issue as well, but it seems to have gone. Can you guys confirm?

Also: I tried mitigating the issue by mounting our custom config on /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/, as @OscarBarrett suggested. That seemed to work. However, as I found out today, it made the bug disappear because that directory wasn't loaded at all. So not quite what I was aiming for :). Are you sure that is the correct path?

mysql.conf.d isn't loaded for 5.6, but is for 5.7

For 5.6, the default server config is in /etc/mysql/my.cnf, and it loads files in /etc/mysql/conf.d after that
For 5.7 the /etc/mysql/my.cnf only loads /etc/mysql/conf.d and /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/ in that order. It isn't explained very well, and if an option is present in multiple files the one parsed last takes priority, which can lead to confusion when custom configs don't take effect. The 5.7 behavior isn't ideal, but was done to make the packages be more compatible with native mysql variants, so we could consider changing it back to the 5.6 structure for the docker image.

Thanks for the explanation. We're on 5.6, so that explains why mysql.conf.d didn't work. The issue is still there, I forgot about the prerequisite for a long project name. So on our Jenkins machines it still crashes :).

In our case, we never mapped an empty directory on /etc/mysql/conf.d. There was a file there that contained:

sql_mode = 'NO_ENGINE_SUBSTITUTION'

So, docker.cnf from the source image wasn't used. As it turns out, missing skip-host-cache is the culprit. If I add that one to the config file that is mapped on conf.d, everything works.
