At our meeting today it seemed like we have a bottlenecked component of mybinder.org - namely a working knowledge of how the testing / travis deployment works in order to ensure that things are what they seem to be.
Could we set up a time for either @yuvipanda or @minrk to explain the testing setup that we've got in the hopes that the rest of the team can contribute to these parts of the deployment?
cc @willingc as she mentioned this was a concern of hers as well!
+1!
One thing I did a while back to get more confident with deploying is to "play" with staging. It was at a time where no one wanted to deploy things so I could poke around and potentially break things to see how things work (or don't). -> I'd be interested in joining
Could we make a set of challenges/exercises to go through that teach you things about our deployment? This could double as docs. WDYT?
Sounds great!
Hey all - here's a short doodle poll to see if we can find a time later this week to video chat and have yuvi explain this out. I can also take notes during the meeting which we can turn into more persistent docs.
https://doodle.com/poll/au7e56pg33ncznwa
I chose morning times so that we can accommodate timezones from PST to europe. If no day works, then we can always push back another week.
ping @jupyterhub/binder-team ...I think that pings everybody? we'll see :-)
maybe it doesn't ping everybody since nobody has filled out the doodle yet...so, manually pinging @jzf2101 @willingc @betatim @minrk @yuvipanda :-)
I can only kinda make the one date I selected just now. Out â›· â›°'ing all of next week. The date I selected is only kinda Ok for me so maybe count my vote as 0.5 only.
@betatim want me to push it to the next week?
Yeah, let's push it out if possible.
we have two folks that can't make the original times scheduled, so I've updated the doodle with later times. Take a look again if you already signed up once!
@yuvipanda I still don't see a response from you on this doodle, so I'm hesitant to go with a day as you're kind of a bottleneck for this meeting to happen...
in addition, finding a time that works for all folks is proving to be quite difficult. We can either:
What do people think?
How about instead we do a series of 1:1s, since I think different members
of the team are at different levels here? We can capture documentation from
these sessions. I'm happy to be spending the extra time required, since I
think this is extremely important now, and would make scheduling easy too.

- Decide to try and capture this information with documentation and
direct team-members thereWhat do people think?

could do some kind of "chain-one-on-one" process? E.g. yuvi teaches person A, person A teaches person B, etc?
I'm happy with either :)

One of the things that I would personally love to do is spend some time getting comfortable with logging, monitoring, and interpreting the grafana dashboard. I would love to come up with a visual flow chart or two like: Outage reported -> check xyz -> check abc -> check qrs -> call in another team member -> spend 15-30 minutes pair troubleshooting -> escalate to Yuvi
ah yes! totally agree - I actually just opened #361 which I think is related to your point @willingc
Short update: I believe that @mpacer was hoping to go through this w/ yuvi, and then they'd give me a runthrough aftwards. Is that right M?
After that it'd be great if we could do some one-on-ones with folks who want to learn about the testing deployment.
I asked @yuvipanda, but it sounded like he would prefer not to go through this one-on-one with me, but would rather do it one-on-one with you or with the both of us. But I'll let him explain.
And agreed, I'd love to learn about the testing deployment, is that equivalent to #361 or should we create a different issue for that?
Would you folks be willing to record the one-on-one with screen sharing so that the rest of us could watch later?
Works for me
that's a great idea @willingc - would also be happy to do one-on-(one/multiple) in the future too. I like the idea of making group plans for knowledge / skill-sharing
This meeting happened a long time ago, and we have decent SRE docs now.
