Mist: Not syncing, tried everything, cant get below 3+ Million left!!!

Created on 27 Mar 2017  ·  58Comments  ·  Source: ethereum/mist

Started a Mist wallet. Had BTC converted to ETH and transferred to the Mist Wallet.
ETH Blockchain confirms that the ETH has been successfully sent to my Mist ETH address.

The issue...
ETH not showing up on Wallet.
Center of window between _Send_ and _Contracts_ it shows 3+ Million blocks left. It's at 0%. Its been hours, and it has not moved to 1% at least.
Have anywhere from 3-7 peers connected at one time.

There has to be a better way to get my ETH to show up on my wallet. Am I doing something wrong, or missing something? I feel like my ETH is being held hostage by the Mist Wallet.

I just want to be able to see my ETH at least 1 time so I could send it to a better wallet without this hassle, such as Coinbase. Don't intend to keep this wallet, just want to be able to send it away from this one.

Any help? Any ideas?

Im using a Windows 7 Pro 32-bit.

v0.8.9

This software is a joke and it patently exposes a massive flaw with Ethereum, it can not scale, if you have to download the entire blockchain to mine or do anything remotely productive on the network. In a few years you are bound to need a dedicated storage server and a dedicated low latency high bandwidth network connection without which Ethereum will be closed to you.

tldr.

The software devs are mediocre and the future of Ethereum will be in the hands of big corporate which is the exact opposite of the stated intentions of the DAO, some things never change I suppose.

Hello, there's indeed a problem with windows 32-bit and Mist. There's a fix on the way, coming out later this week. But no worries, you can also try to run geth (the ethereum node client) separately, and it'll probably work properly.

So I kindly ask you to download and run geth, then you start Mist.

Having the exact same issue as APowderBlue, trying the geth solution now.

Wow, surprised how well your solution worked @evertonfraga !!! Thank you!!

@FromToKeto I actually downloaded the Geth and it did start the syncing process. I've had it syncing for literally about 3 days straight, and it's only at 46%. SMH
I notice that after passing about 30% it starts slowing down. Like its been stuck on 46% for maybe 4 hours now. It still continues to reduce in transactions left, but doesn't seem to be going up in percentage completed.

I seriously regret ever getting this wallet and transferring ETH before figuring it out. Thank god its only a small amount of ETH. After applying the heavy load it puts on your computer to synchronize, I'd say that I have lost ETH. The sync process seems to be putting a huge load on my computer.

Any advise on help speeding the process up???

Again, 3 solid days of syncing and only reached 46% complete. FML

@APowderBlue I'm _literally_ having the exact same issue (first wallet, transferred a couple ETH to it). It's syncing now at least, still at 1% but at least it's moving...

3 days and only 46%?? Geez, what wallet are going to get once you can finally get your ETH out? I only downloaded Mist because I thought it was most widely used and would be best for staking in the future.

When I looked at the wallet last night, I was at about 35% done downloading. Came home today to see the application was not running. Starting the wallet shows that it is starting the download from the beginning. wtf. This happened once before after a few percent and thought it was a fluke, but I see it's not. I was days in this last time.

I have no idea which wallet I'm going to go with. For now I have all my ETH is in the coinbase wallet. I know it isn't the best, but it gets the job done and no syncing required. Makes buying ETH and trading ETH easy. Again, it's just temporary until I find a better wallet.

Just a heads up, the syncing process started very nice and was going up in percentage rather quickly maybe 5% in an hour, but man it slowed down very quickly after that. And yes, 3 days in and it's practically stuck at 46%.

Again, it's only about 3 ETH, but man its putting a serious load on my computer, plus electric consumption. I hope to break even by the end of 100%.

Does it slow down because the blocks are getting bigger? Maybe that's silly...

I've confirmed whenever I close my wallet, it starts download from scratch. That seems broken. When I look in my %appdata%\Ethereumgeth\chaindata I see stuff from a week ago, so not sure what's going on there.

@anixosees pretty sure the old files are blocks that were synced during that time. Your wallet will sync new blocks over time.

Hi @APowderBlue, some generic advice in case your issue did resolve yet:

Please make sure you are running the latest version and your node is fully synced.
Although this may take between 1h (SSD) and 10 hours (HDD) you should be able to see a progress bar on the splash-screen or in the main-window.

Some recommendations:

  • check your account's balance using http://etherscan.io
  • make a backup of all account's keyfiles via menu -> accounts -> backup -> accounts
  • should the initial sync take very long, consider following these instructions to speed it up
  • if the peer count stays at 0 and it does not sync, verify your firewall settings
  • consider using http://myetherwallet.com in the meantime

If this didn't solve your issue, please follow these instructions and upload the node.log files:

  • Log files

    • go to menu -> accounts -> backup -> application data

    • zip and upload node.log and all other node.log.X files

After the initial day, mine is now also running slow to hardly running. I sometimes quit Geth and Mist to restart them and they download a few blocks and then freeze up again.

Any idea on when the new updated Mist will come out? @evertonfraga said later this week - is that still the case?

Yeah, seariously. I'd like to know that too.

I've tried everything and used different computers, same issue continues on all of them.

@FromToKeto I had this problem a few weeks back, I was using the win32 & I switched to the win64 & blocks were syncing steady on the 64 bit. Just make sure you backup your account before doing so.

@garretlaxton Is it even compatible? One is for a 32 and the other is for a 64.

@APowderBlue Are you using Mist or Ethereum Wallet?

Mist

im having the same issue . mine was about to finish. i was at 90% and then i come back to see it drop down to 64% . wtf . ether scan says i have 1 ether in my wallet but i dont see it :(

@rrodasZ92 the percentage indicator only shows the progress of the current sync session, thus after restarting Ethereum Wallet it will be at 0% even if you already downloaded 90% of the full chain.

Is there anyway to take the backup of the account and open up the ether elsewhere? It's been a couple of weeks since I downloaded this and now I'm having trouble even launching geth... I am always getting "Ethereum Node Connection Error" as well.

@FromToKeto for now the easiest way is to use https://www.myetherwallet.com/ ;)

@luclu But my mist wallet still does not show the Ether I bought because it can't download all the blocks. How do I transfer to my etherwallet? Any chance you could provide me with a step by step guide?

@FromToKeto to solve the sync issue, please upload the node.log files as asked before.

To send Ether using https://www.myetherwallet.com, go to Send Ether & Token -> Keystore File (UTC / JSON) Use the keyfile from Mist menu -> accounts -> backup -> account data. You will find the files in the keystore folder.

I have the same issue downloaded the latest wallet 0-8-10 from https://www.ethereum.org/
Let it run for 24 hours and never syncs completely... So cant experience / try ethereum :(

Is it just me or does all crypto currencies have this issue, where when the block chain gets huge everything stops working. I would figure the chain should be like a torrent source, and just download from latest to oldest so you can start using the thing as fast as possible. (I may be completely wrong here since I do not know how the internal working of the block chain).

What I have found out is that there is a antivirus problem. I have installed on 2 different PC the wallet without problem(No antivirus installed). When I tried to install on a PC with antivirus (Bitdifender) it wasn't syncing - even throw I turned it off for testing reasons

"621.783 из 3,929,306"неизменно уже грузится 18 часов . Когда это завершится или хотя бы продолжится?

It's now end of June and i'm having the same issue ... and it's on a 64-bit windows 7. Maybe it's b/c it's windows 7 :/

Yes, 64-bit windows 7. It is necessary to close and start again. So downloaded already 761893 from 3934967. Github ornery service, huge dis-like - the whole world will know!

I'm also experiencing long sync delays on Ethereum Wallet, on latest Windows 10 Pro.

I'm currently running geth in a command line, but this doesn't appear to be improving things, I'm stuck at 99 blocks left, and 60%, and no way to send / receive ether.

Perhaps this is an indication that we missed the boat on Ethereum, and it has set sail forever?

Same here, been trying to sync up for two days now. It's stuck on the last ~400 blocks.

I tried everything, from starting all over without --fast, with --fast. Left the PC on for two consecutive days/nights, tried geth from the commandline, using just mist, etc.

I can't get past the last 200 - 400 blocks or so.

And yes, I have enough free disk space (1TB+) and at the moment 25 connected peers on a fiber connection (200MB/s up/down)

These are the latest logs (as of just now) from geth:

Yes, I'M stuck.also, but in the 4.0075.288 block from 4.0075.425, it's little few block away... I already try to delete the cachedata and redownload, and use geth --fast , but still same problem

same here 4.003.816 no progress after 2 days

Gentlemen, even though people had syc issues in this way or another, you can always find the up-to-date account information from public website, e.g.:
https://etherscan.io/address/0xe853c56864a2ebe4576a807d26fdc4a0ada51919

You can replace your account address in this link

Don't be upset :)

Except that isn't the way blockchain is supposed to work is it, by looking it up on a public website? How is that an immutable record, there is no security or weak security? I would prefer to trust the banks .

Same issue here - doesn't sync the latest ~200 blocks... is this a bug or a feature? ))

I can't download last 200 blocks+/-

Dears,
If you are not a developer and just want ETH wallet for personal use, I recommend 'Parity' strongly.

After installing Geth and trying 'full sync', it took my desktop one-week synchronizing, it was still struggling at 2,38x,xxx th blocks. At a step around one minute every one more block.

Alternatively, I tried Parity and fond it so much. It took only a few hours (maybe one hour, I didn't wait in front of my PC) before it's fully synced. By default, it's in 'quick sync' mode. The UI is much more user-friendly. It is compatible with My Ethereum Wallet. Its native wallet generation is interesting too.

Download and try this: https://parity.io/

BTW, the default Parity sync saves disk space significantly.

I hate to keep repeating myself, if you are not a node on the network of a blockchain you cannot verify any transaction which negates the purpose of a blockchain. Blockchain is fundamentally peer-to-peer record keeping. If you rely on a third party to do this for you then that is the weakest link in the chain and is bound to be attacked/exploited by hackers or the owners themselves. It negates the purpose of blockchain, the banks offer complete security for a fee, blockchain can only do away with this if it is truly peer-to-peer and an immutable record of transactions.

tldr; learn blockchain

@remcoros I have same exact problem as you my friend. Were you able to resolve it somehow?

@AndyTrades I gave up and use Parity now. Works like a charm

@Newnsj that was in their wallet smart contract, not the client software. But you're right, it's all code, people make mistakes. Could happen to anyone and any project for that matter.

No not if you can sync directly to the blockchain without any need for an application sitting on top of it. Like I keep saying that is the key benefit of the blockchain, to attack the blockchain itself you would need to hack the records sitting on every node, with all the variety of OS's and versions, and do so almost simultaneously all across the world. Whereas if you use Parity or other wallets and third party applications sitting on top of the blockchain on a server somewhere then your completely vulnerable as they only need to attack that one server.

It isnt even blockchain anymore, your back to client-server, you get none of the benefits of blockchain, in terms of security and immutable records, so why use it?

I'm running parity as a full node, and not using any of their wallet smart contracts. It's just an alternative to geth. But they (optionally) provide some more functionality than just the client. It also has a nice UI.

I don't see the difference

It's different for the 'light' wallet apps, websites and such. Then you're back to trusting a 3rd party.

@remcoros ok I wasn't aware Parity enabled you to run a full node, out of interest what hardware and OS are you running it on?

So, no resolution to this yet?

+1 I live in Australia and it will probably never sync.

So anything solved about this ? Any leads why this fails for so many ?

Hi, we have just launched Mist v0.9.1, with Light Client integration (beta).

What does that mean?

  • Sync times reduced by an order of magnitude while staying safe.
  • Much smaller storage required.

How to activate?
30986199-ff885216-a468-11e7-82ec-e66aeb859ab8

I'm closing this issue. Should you have any trouble, please refer to these channels:

Why this issue has been closed? The issue is still here, if I try to sync a full client, sync stop before completion at random level. I have tried multiple times clearing also the blockchain folder.

Still no solution to this? There's no light client in mist 0.9.3 and it seems no methods work whether it's running geth alone, using different commands etc.

I am facing the same issues as @SMH17 and @MarcusLO
