Planned for a long time. There is now an on-flood callback for nodes which can drop (and therefore extinguish) a torch. Should be simple so can anyone make a PR?
You can use the extinguish sound from the fire mod.
What's the relevance? This does not use 'on_flood'.
It would be cool have the real torch as default. The temporary torches fits perfectly with the minetest_game, and the time limitation would make other light sources like lava and mese lamps/posts more relevant.
Different issue. Node timer torches are an interesting idea, but i suspect unpopular with those who have lit their worlds with thousands of torches and don't want to keep replacing them as they go out one by one. I still think temporary torches are best as an optional mod.
Off-topic:
I made something like tenplus1's mod: limited_torches. It causes every torch in existence to eventually "burn-out" after so many real-time hours. It was specifically done that way for servers.
Gives a sense of abandonment to buildings so that players can know that an area is no longer used. It also makes mines have to be lit up again.
I'd place charcoal on a server with this mod so that people don't have to keep mining a finite supply of coal just to keep their lights on.
I do like the idea of flooding torches and making them drop. The other game already does that.
