mailto is the url for emails.
Motivation
ppl regularly post emails on masto expecting ppl to send them (or, sometimes, as a joke, but I don't propose those should be clickable). it'd be cool if there was a way to make them actually clickable. mailto is supported everywhere*, just like http and https. finally, I couldn't find an existing issue about it.
* on phones. desktop support is kinda meh - it only really works on apple and linux. (has windows finally decided to ship an email client at no extra cost yet? .-.)

If you suggest auto-linking e-mails in the format [email protected], this would lead to a lot of false positives due to the fact that fediverse handles use the same format and people exclude the front @ when they don't want to tag a person.
I'm not sure if anyone would know to type mailto:[email protected] in their text except people who saw this feature request because I don't remember any sites allowing that kind of format to be auto-linked, so the utility of this feature would be very minimal.

yeah I mean explicit mailto:. also in profile/bio/fields.
maybe it'd be particularly helpful in profile fields.

maybe have a hint like "to include your email address in your profile, prefix it with mailto:, such as in mailto:[email protected]" when editing your profile?

I want to support this idea, i think adding more URI schemes is great in all cases

mailto:, such as inmailto:[email protected]" when editing your profile?
