Mastodon: Muting is too powerful

Created on 12 Jun 2020  ·  6Comments  ·  Source: tootsuite/mastodon

Expected behaviour

Mutes will hide only posts from that person.

Actual behaviour

Mutes will remove posts mentioning the person, even if boosted by someone you follow.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Mute someone
  2. Browse a profile of someone who boosted a post mentioning that muted user
  3. Note that the post never appeared in your home TL or lists

Specifications

Rationale / etc

Doubtless some people will want the existing behavior of completely hiding a person, but to me this is more like a block, so I think the easiest way to resolve this would be to accept "stealth blocks" #11562 and make it so that only blocks will behave this way (in removing anything that mentions the person).

Of course, I'd also point toward other options such as combining the mute/block options into one feature #9277, which would allow expanding on which behaviors the user wants a la #8634 or #12912. Also related: #8186

posts mentioning blocked users are a good way to check up on how ppl are growing so you can make decisions about when to unblock them

This is something that should be covered by filters. I agree that mutes should only mute/filter the person muted.

Can we rather not remove mute as an option, but make it show muted replies in threads and when boosted, but hidden behind a really small banner saying “This status was posted by the user @abcd that you've muted. (View)”?

I have to confess... I add some users I follow to the mute list because they post or boost too often and flood my timeline with unwanted posts, but I still want to follow them and check from time to time. I think combining mute and block together will remove this ability, which isn't something I want.

why would it? if you're referring to #9277 then that would involve the opportunity to add more one-by-one options. but mutes still currently and for the foreseeable future will allow you to follow people you've muted...

Because blocking for me means that I actually block user in one way or another from interacting with me, while with muting I'm just silencing the users' posts for some time, but still receive notifications and can interact with them. It's about the terms, muting is much easier to understand than “stealth block.”

probably best to discuss that on #9277 or #8186 then -- this issue is about mutes hiding all mention of a person
