While having rel=me links in the profile is a useful feature, I don't think it should automatically be the case for all links.
Indeed, I don't think people would expect any link put there to signal that the resource is them.

(If you're a user, don't worry about this).It's meaningless without a circular reference, so there is no downside to always putting rel=me on, and the upside is a simpler UI than having to let the user decide and require them to think about rel=me
I don't have a meaningful example in mind right now, so maybe that's an edge case not worth considering, but since this is completely implicit, I think two Mastodon users could link to each other for different purposes and not consider that their links could end up being verified?
Hmm, but in that case, it might actually be more valuable to have it show up as a verified link? That way, it's like the other user vouching for it. Of course, that depends on what the associated value is...
