Mastodon: Filtering is not nearly powerful enough

Created on 18 Aug 2018  路  2Comments  路  Source: tootsuite/mastodon

I'm given to understand that filtering was switched from regex to simple word/phrase matching in order to make it more accessible to users. That's fine and good, but removing regex completely with no way to turn it back on is stamping out flexibility in exchange for accessibility. Word/phrase matching is not powerful enough to ACTUALLY filter out content you don't want to see (especially since the "whole word" checkbox doesn't appear to work! but that may just be the instance I'm on).

I'd really like to see regex filtering make a return as an optional feature.

I have a really hard time finding people using the same small language than me, because some critical filters are missing in the public timelines. For 1 message in Esperanto, there are probably more than 100 status that are actually pictures, links, hashtags, emojis that have too few words to be correctly associated to a language that can be filtered out.

Filtering by words is nice, but that can not solve the problem. These status don't even have words.

Public timelimes presently have the toggle "Media only". This is nice for artists, but what about other kind of users? I would love to see new toggles to hide specific type of content. These are examples:

  • Status with only a media (show / hide)
  • Status with only links (show / hide)
  • Status with only hashtags
  • Status with only emojis (many messages are just one emoji)
  • Serious mode (hide all status with less than 3 words).

Seconding fariparedes, please bring back regexes for filtering.
