It would appear that your backend is missing, and that's why the test is failing; see
ERROR: LoadError: MethodError: no method matching backend_show(_::Missing_, ::IOContext{IOStream}, ::MIME{Symbol("image/jpeg")}, ::Scene)
From my open PR on the docs:
It could be that GLMakie built wrong, or didn't register as an available backend for some reason. By default, Makie will try to use GLMakie as a backend, but if it does not build correctly for whatever reason, then scenes will not be displayed.
Ensure that your graphics card supports OpenGL; if it does not (old models, or relatively old integrated graphics cards), then you may want to consider CairoMakie.

It looks like you need OpenGL v3.3 or greater for GLMakie to build correctly. See the following lines in the build script of GLMakie (m is the version as parsed by GLMakie).
From the stacktrace you posted on Slack, it seems like we didn't even get to the point where GLMakie parses the version, only to the point where it tries using GDAL.

Might be a weird download error... What if you nuked the GDAL directory and reinstalled that first?

something like:
using GDAL
pathof(GDAL) |> dirname |> dirname |> dirname
would give you the path, and then you could go there and nuke it manually.

This seems completely unrelated to GDAL.
Did you actually try the recommendation from the warning?
sudo apt-get install libglfw3 ?

I tried it again:
sudo apt-get install libglfw3
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
libglfw3 is already the newest version (3.1.2-3).
and build GLFW, and test GLFW and test Makie fail in the same way

These errors are now solved with the solution outlined here: https://github.com/JuliaGL/GLFW.jl/issues/180 directed to me by SimonDanisch. This was also done under Ubuntu and the solution required performing the cmake directly
