Machine: Fail to create default machine on Windows/Virtualbox
I'm trying to create a default machine on windows 8.1 and it fails.
docker-machine -version
docker-machine version 0.4.1 (e2c88d6)
docker-machine create -d virtualbox default

Error creating machine: exit status 1

The vm is created in Virtualbox and when I try to start it manually, I get this error dialog:

Make sure the kernel module has been loaded successfully.

File/Device open failed. Driver is probably stuck stopping/starting. Try 'sc.exe query vboxdrv' to get more information about its state. Rebooting may actually help.
When I try sc.exe query vboxdrv as told, I get this:

As the logs say multiple times that rebooting may actually help, I rebooted...
And yes, the vm can be started either manually or via docker-machine start default!!

I also tried to start the machine before rebooting:
docker-machine start default
exit status 1
Started machines may have new IP addresses. You may need to re-run the `docker-machine env` command.
I encountered this issue. Solved by reinstalling C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\drivers\vboxdrv\VBoxDrv.inf

My experience: trying to update DockerToolbox today and encounter same issue
When you are updating DockerToolbox silently (eg. using chocoloatey), some install steps (like virtualbox) may failed silently because of process using vboxdriver
steps to check:
- assume virtualbox is correctly installed. I recommend a UI install to know running process to kill to get safe installation+reboot
- assume vboxdrv service is running:
sc.exe query vboxdrv
you should get "STATE : 4 RUNNING"

I encountered this issue. Solved by reinstalling C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\drivers\vboxdrv\VBoxDrv.inf
