Minty fresh Ubuntu 18.04 system
LXD v3.0.0 (latest from apt, how to get v3.0.1?)
Started seeing this beginning last week crop up arbitrarily across my infrastructure. Out of ~10 delete operations, I have seen this happen to 3 containers on 2 different systems.
~# lxc delete test1
Error: Failed to destroy ZFS filesystem: cannot destroy 'lxd/containers/test1': dataset is busy
~# lxc ls

Tried googling around a bit and I have tried the most common tips on figuring out what might be keeping the dataset busy: There are no snapshots or dependencies, dataset is unmounted i.e. zfs list reports

Could LXD still be holding the dataset? I see there are a number of zfs related fixes in v3.0.1 but I cannot do an apt upgrade to this version..?
Edit: issuing systemctl restart lxd does not resolve the issue, so maybe not lxd after all. Strange...
It's most likely some other process that's forked the mount table and is now preventing LXD from unmounting the container...
You can run grep containers/test1 /proc/*/mountinfo to find out what process that is.
You can then run nsenter -t <PID> -m -- umount /var/lib/lxd/storage-pools/lxd/containers/test1 to get rid of that mount, at which point lxc delete should work again...
You mean
cat /proc/*/mountinfo | grep containers/test1 ?
No hits ...
lxd delete still reports dataset is busy :(
Edit: grepping for the other, running, container results in lots of hits, so I think I have formatted that grep correctly. It seems there is nothing referencing test1 in proc/*/mountinfo. Any further ideas? :)
Hmm, then it's not mounted anywhere visible which would likely make it a kernel bug...
You can wait for a while hoping for the kernel to untangle whatever's going on or you can reboot the system which will fix it for sure...
Sorry I don't have a better answer for this.
@stgraber Oh dear Cthulhu, that's bad. That also explains why I'm seeing it across several systems, as I keep my servers in synch w/regards to kernel/os/package versions.
I just checked on one of my other systems, and there I have a dataset which I still cannot destroy even after 48+ hours. So it does not seem this will go away on its own. There it is also "invisible".
If you want access to the server Stéphane and poke around a bit, let me know. Otherwise I guess I'll just have to mitigate this manually (sigh) and update my kernels when I get the chance, and hope that resolves the issue.
PS: I am not used to seeing grep issued that way, your command was of course correctly formatted, I just assumed it didn't since I didn't get any hits #n00b
Should I report this as a bug somewhere, you think?
If others stumble on this issue: There is a workaround in that it is possible to rename the dataset. So if your container is stopped, you can do:
zfs rename lxd/containers/test1 lxd/containers/test1failed
After which you can issue
lxc delete test1
However you then still have this dataset hanging around, which you will need to clean up at a later date, i.e. after a reboot I suppose. This pretty much sucks! :D
Yeah, that's pretty odd, I wonder what's keeping that active... You don't have any running zfs command for that dataset (zfs send, zfs snapshot, ...)?
Just run ps aux | grep test1 to be sure.
If not, then I'd be happy to take a look, see if anything stands out. There's a pretty good chance that it's a kernel bug, but we haven't seen reports of this before so it's intriguing.
(Note that I'm on vacation in Europe this week so not quite as around as usual :))
Nope no zfs commands running. I have sent you access by mail :) - enjoy your vacation..!!
Very weird. I poked around for a bit, eventually restarting the lxd process which was apparently enough to get zfs to unstick and I could then delete the dataset just fine.
Now that we know that kicking lxd apparently unsticks zfs, can you let me know if you have another machine with the same issue (or can cause the one I already have access to to run into it again)?
I'd like to see what LXD shows as open prior to being killed, then if just killing it is enough to make zfs happy and if not, then why would lxd starting again somehow unstick zfs.
FWIW, what I tried before restarting lxd was:
None of which showed anything relevant...
It could be an fd leak from a file that was read or written from the container by LXD and wasn't closed, but what's odd is that if it was the case, we should have seen an fd with the container path and there were none of them... Hopefully I can look at another instance of this problem and figure that part out.
Marking incomplete for now, @Kramerican let me know when you have another affected system.
I sure will @stgraber I'm also on vacation and haven't had a chance to check if I can provoke this behaviour. I'll let you know.
@Kramerican still on vacation? :)
@stgraber Yes until next week - but I will set some time aside then to try and force this behavior.
@stgraber I have had little luck in forcing this behavior, but this has been cropping up all over the shop these last few days.
I had written some fallback code in our tools which simply renames the dataset, so that lxc delete could be run. These datasets are still "stuck" and zfs refuses to delete them. I have not restarted lxd in order to delete them - is it enough for you to get access to one of these systems to diagnose further? In which case let me know and I'll give you access. Thanks..!
@Kramerican yep, having access to one of the systems with such a stuck dataset should be enough to try to track down what LXD's got open that would explain the busy error.
@stgraber Excellent. Mail with details sent.
@Kramerican so the only potential issue I'm seeing is a very large number of mapped /config files which is a leak that I believe has already been fixed with a combination of lxd and liblxc fix. Any chance you can upgrade your systems to 3.0.1 of both liblxc1 and lxd? Both have been available for about a week now.
If it's an option at all, at least on your Ubuntu 18.04 systems, I'd recommend considering moving to the lxd snap (--channel=3.0/stable in your case) as that would get you a much faster turnaround for fixes than we can do with the deb package.
@stgraber Excellent. However on the system where you have access, I have apt upgrade hanging at 95% at Setting up lxd (3.0.1-0ubuntu1~18.04.1) ..
/var/log/lxd/lxd.log shows and entry which I think is responsible:
lvl=eror msg="Failed to cleanly shutdown daemon: raft did not shutdown within 10s" t=2018-07-04T21:31:27+0200
Is raft a process I can kill? Suggestions on how to unstick the upgrade?
@stgraber Nevermind - it got unstuck after a while. Everything seems fine.
I will upgrade all systems and report back if the issue persists. Thanks..!
@Kramerican pretty sure it got unstuck because I logged in and ran systemctl stop lxd lxd.socket to unblock things. Looks like the RAFT database is hitting a timeout at startup.
It's actually a bug that 3.0.1 fixes but if your database has too many transactions prior to the upgrade, it still fails to start. The trick to unstick it is to temporarily move it to a very fast tmpfs which I'm doing on that system now.
@stgraber ah yes I saw that lxc ls and other commands were not working. I won't mess around on that system anymore until you report back.
Series of commands which will help unstick lxd would be nice to have here, in case I see this happen on one of the other ~10 hosts I need to upgrade
@Kramerican all done, that system is good to go.
If you hit the same problem, you'll need to:
This will unstick the update. Once the update is all done, run again (for good measure):
That should ensure that LXD is fully stopped (containers are still running fine though).
Once that's done, do:
You'll see the daemon start, let it run until it hits "Done updating instance types" which is when it'll be ready for normal operation, then hit ctrl+c to stop it. Once done, do:
And you'll be back online with the newly compacted and much faster database.
This is only needed on systems where LXD isn't able to load its database within the 10s timeout so hopefully a majority of your systems will not need this trick. Once LXD successfully starts once on 3.0.1, the database gets compacted automatically in the background as well as on exit to prevent this problem from ever occurring again.
@stgraber This is pure epic. Thanks so much, I'll get started cracks knuckles :)
@Kramerican I've also deleted the two failed datasets on sisko, so restarting LXD did the trick to unstick zfs, now the question is whether we'll be seeing the issue re-appear with 3.0.1.
@stgraber ok so I completed the upgrade on all my hosts, only had to follow your steps here on one other system :+1:
In the process however it turns out that one of my systems was already all up to date with 3.0.1 and here the failure with a stuck dataset happened today
I have just sent a mail with details and access to the system
@stgraber Did you see my last message yesterday, where I'd found that this had actually already happened on a 3.0.1 system? You should have access details in your inbox :)
@Kramerican Hi, I saw the comment and e-mail but haven't yet had time to look at that system.
@stgraber Can I assume that you are on track with this bug and it is in the process of being fixed? Let me know if you need the user account I set up for you, otherwise I'd like to nuke it from that system. Due diligence and all :)
@Kramerican Hi, unfortunately no, I haven't had time to look into this yet as I've been having management meetings this week with limited time to look into LXD bugs.
@stgraber That is all good big buddy - I will leave that user account for now, so you can dig into that system whenever it suits you best.
@stgraber This is an on-going issue across most hosts in our infrastructure. I now have quite a few hanging datasets lying around, as this keeps cropping up. All systems are running LXD 3.0.1 on Bionic at the moment.
Hope you can find time to give this another look one of them days :) Please let me know if you need me to re-send access credentials
@stgraber Hi, I'm sorry for this , I have meet a issue, Hope you can help me.
when I type lxc list , I got this:
+----------------+---------+------+------+------------+-----------+
| NAME | STATE | IPV4 | IPV6 | TYPE | SNAPSHOTS |
+----------------+---------+------+------+------------+-----------+
| flowing-beagle | ERROR | | | PERSISTENT | |
+----------------+---------+------+------+------------+-----------+
| lxdmcj | ERROR | | | PERSISTENT | |
And then ,I try to delete the lxdmcj ,It sent me a message:
error: cannot open 'mcj-lxd-zfs': dataset does not exist
@ma3252788 that's unrelated to the issue we're investigating here. Your error suggests that your entire zpool is somehow offline. Check with zpool status to see if it's offline due to data corruption or if it's entirely missing from ZFS (not imported).
I have run into the same problem on two different systems, recently:
Failed to destroy ZFS filesystem: cannot destroy 'z/lxd/containers/otp1': dataset is busy
I'm on snap lxd version 3.6 Rev 9298.
snap list:
lxd 3.6 9298 stable canonical✓ -/etc/lsb-release:
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS"uname -a:
Linux star 4.15.0-36-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 24 16:19:09 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I did the mountinfo search and did a ps -f on the resulting pids, which can be done in one line like this:
ps -f -p `grep containers/otp1 /proc/*/mountinfo | sed 's-^/proc/--' | sed 's-/.*--' | tr '\n' ',' | sed 's/,$//'`
The result was 26 processes of the kind:
root 560 1 0 Oct15 ? 00:00:00 [lxc monitor] /var/snap/lxd/common/lxd/containers fil
(where fil is a running container)
plus this process:
root 2356 1 0 Oct15 ? 00:00:05 lxcfs /var/snap/lxd/common/var/lib/lxcfs -p /var/snap/lxd/common/lxcfs.pid
The system has been running for 10 days, so Oct15 must be around boot time.
For the lxc monitor processes, I compared the 26 containers that I saw in ps with the list of the 31 running containers. The 5 missing containers were containers that I created yesterday or today. Two were new, 1 was renamed (lxc move), 1 was copied (lxc copy), and the 5th was the container that was copied from.
In both cases, the container that cannot be deleted is a container that I've been cloning frequently from another container, cycling through this pattern:
lxc copy --container-only otp otp1
lxc profile apply otp1 profile1,profile2
lxc start otp1
... use otp1 for a while
lxc stop otp1
lxc delete otp1
@melato the issue from @Kramerican is a bit different because in his case he has no actual references being held for the mount.
Your case is somewhat more common, effectively the container was already mounted by the time lxcfs started (possibly because lxcfs crashed and restarted?) which meant lxcfs would get a copy of the mount into its mount namespace, holding a reference to it.
To unblock things, what you can do is use nsenter -t PID -m against the processes that you found has mount references, then unmount the path through that shell, once all references are gone, delete should work fine.
@brauner for the lxcfs part of this, any chance we can make lxcfs cleanup its mount namespace so it doesn't hold those refs?
The lxc monitor side is a bit harder because it's not itself maintaining a mount namespace, instead it's using whatever mount namespace LXD was running with at the time, effectively holding onto an old namespace as LXD get refreshed, I've not yet found a good way to avoid this issue, some of the options are:
[lxc monitor] use an intermediate mount namespace that it cleans up after initialization to only reference what it absolutely needsI was able to delete the container after doing the nsenter -p suggestion for the lxcfs process.
I can confirm the bug that @melato has discovered recently. In my case it's a cloned container too. The nsenter workaround fixed it.
I've hit this "Failed to destroy ZFS filesystem" bug on LXD 3.2 on Alpine 3.8.1 as well. I'll try @stgraber's workarounds & report back
It appears that my container may have gotten into this state because the underlying image expired & was removed from the image cache. ZFS was in a weird state where it said the dataset was busy, but it certainly wasn't mounted under anything accessible on the host.
I'll make a local copy of the image (debian stretch) before launch so hopefully the image won't expire (I need to check into that).
Luckily this system is not a critical production box, so a simple fix to delete the container was:
I'll chime in if it happens again...
BTW this is
Linux 4.14
ZFS v0.7.8-1
lxd 3.2
lxcfs 3.0.1
lxc 2.1.1
(so legacy cgroups mode)
For the record, after much wrangling, I've gotten LXC 3.0.2 to compile on Alpine. Haven't had a chance to test it yet.
If others stumble on this issue: There is a workaround in that it is possible to rename the dataset. So if your container is stopped, you can do:
zfs rename lxd/containers/test1 lxd/containers/test1failedAfter which you can issue
lxc delete test1However you then still have this dataset hanging around, which you will need to clean up at a later date, i.e. after a reboot I suppose. This pretty much sucks! :D
In my case your workaround works perfectly and I am able to destroy dataset without a reboot after renaming it and deleting lxd container.
Just ran into this issue running LXD 3.10 (snap), which restarted on February 12, one day after the package has been published on snapcraft.io. From lxd.log:
LXD 3.10 is starting in normal mode" path=/var/snap/lxd/common/lxd
[...]
Initializing global database"
Updating the LXD global schema. Backup made as \"global.bak\"
The problem is indeed bound to the 10s timeout, as it takes exactly 10s to lxc to print the "dataset is busy" error. Comment https://github.com/lxc/lxd/issues/4656#issuecomment-402550930 made me think that lxd >= 3.0.1 was able to compact the database in the background to avoid this issue, but apparently this is not the case, or the cause of the problem is different.
The machine where I'm experiencing the issue has 27 containers, but it is not heavily loaded. Containers could be removed reliaibly up to a few days ago. Is there any other useful information I can let you have? Thanks!
Cc: @blackboxsw
@paride your issue is likely a different one and just has to do with snapd generating new mount namespaces which hold up mount table entries for ZFS.
For one such un-deletable stopped container, please do:
This will hopefully show you some PIDs, those are the PIDs that are in a mount namespace where this container is still mounted.
You can then unblock this issue by doing:
Doing this for any of the returned PID will usually make all the mount go away for all the other PIDs as they're likely to share the same mount namespace.
We landed code in the LXD snap a while back to avoid such issues by doing some very complicated dance in the various mount tables, this usually worked well, except that the most recent snapd release had an upgrade bug which made it so it would hide the old mount table, making our normal mitigation useless for some users... As far as I can tell, this bug got resolved in snapd so this shouldn't happen again with the next snapd release (crosses fingers)...
Thanks @stgraber, I did try grepping /proc/*/mountinfo but nothing there matches the name of the container I'm trying to delete:
$ lxc delete paride-ubuntu-core-16
Error: Failed to destroy ZFS filesystem: cannot destroy 'zfs-lxd/containers/paride-ubuntu-core-16': dataset is busy
$ grep container/paride-ubuntu-core-16 /proc/*/mountinfo
$
@paride oh, oops, try containers/paride-ubuntu-core-18
@stgraber thanks, it worked.
This is now happening almost always, breaking a lot of automated environments, where a task is performed and then the container deleted. This sometimes ends up in having servers with hundreds of STOPPED, dead containers. Is there a "real" fix?
@vvug +1 Yes we see this as well after upgrading to v3.10 with Snap - pretty much every single delete operation will fail with this message - this is consistent and happens across our entire infrastructure.
For the record, I saw this error message a number of times this week (Ubuntu Bionic, lxd snap 3.11 build 10343, sub-dataset/"shared" ZFS pool). Re-executing the deletion after a short pause--one second was enough--seemingly solved this issue, so it might have been related to the machine being under load.
This morning, I deleted three running containers in a row (when the machine was _not_ under load) and did not see this problem.
I think there are (there were?) two issues involved. One with the namespace mounts, for which a workaround is shown in the previous comments and which seems to be gone now. I can now lxc delete --force reliably on bionic systems. I think the latest update to the lxd snap helped here. This issue can't be worked around by waiting and retrying: the stray mounts have to be unmounted manually.
On some systems (disco systems in my case) lxc delete --force still fails with the "dataset is busy" error, but the deletion succeeds if retried immediately after. In my case I don't even need to wait for a second: a lxc delete --force <x> ; lxc delete <x> already works. I can always reproduce this problem on up-to-date, amd64 disco systems, while I can't reproduce it on bionic systems (but @m-ueberall can!). @stgraber hinted at a kernel issue.
I'm facing the same issue with LXD snap 3.13 on Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04.
This is definitely still an issue. I understand that the ZFS kernel module is likely to be at fault, but can this please be worked around? I think that retrying the destroy operation after a short wait time should suffice.
Implementing a workaround isn't necessarily sweeping the bug a under the carpet. For example LXD could be explicit about the failure and the retry, printing a warning. In this way we could have reliable scripts while still having a feedback on what's going on. Once the bug is fixed (i.e. the warning stops appearing), the workaround can be removed.
LXD already retries all ZFS operations up to 20 times over a 10s span.
Also, I have noticed that this issue happens only with LXD versions installed with snap.
@stgraber then it's a mystery how retrying manually helps...
As a side effect of this problem ephemeral containers are not deleted when stopped with lxc stop <container>. In this case the command fails silently, giving the impression it succeeded, but leaves the container behind in the STOPPED state.
Looking in /var/snap/lxd/common/lxd/logs/lxd.log reveals that:
lvl=eror msg="Failed deleting container storage" err="Failed to destroy ZFS filesystem: cannot destroy 'zfs-lxd/containers/ephemeral-test': dataset is busyn" name=ephemeral-test
Stopping the ephemeral container with e.g. lxc exec <container> systemctl poweroff makes it disappear as expected.
Oh well. For my future self when I get here again, the (or a) related kernel bug is filed in Ubuntu bug 1779156
Been digging into this a bit further with lxc 3.17 on Eoan with lxc delete --force:
lxc launch ubuntu:bionic z1
Creating z1
Starting z1
lxc delete z1 --force
Error: Failed to destroy ZFS filesystem: Failed to run: zfs destroy -r default/containers/z1: cannot destroy 'default/containers/z1': dataset is busy
However, re-running the delete works fine:
lxd.lxc delete z1 --force
Looking at system calls, it appears that the first failing delete
--force command attempts to destroy the zfs file system multiple times
and then gives up. In doing so, it umounts the zfs file system. Hence
the second time the delete is issued it works fine because zfs is now
umounted. So it appears that the ordering in the delete is not as it
expected.
It seems to do:
zfs destroy x 20 (or so and then gives up because of errno 16 -EBUSY)
zfs umount
I believe it should be doing:
zfs umount
zfs destroy
@ColinIanKing hmm, how did you end up seeing the commands be run in that order?
Causing LXD to log all subcommands gets me:

Spaces have been added to denote, create, start, stop, delete.
This was done by running:
lxc launch ubuntu:bionic z1
lxc delete z1 --force
Note that you won't see repeat destroys above as the initial one succeeds here.
Also worth noting that our zfsPoolVolumeDestroy function (the one that calls destroy) does specifically handle umounts ahead of destroy:
https://github.com/lxc/lxd/blob/master/lxd/storage_zfs_utils.go#L248
I added copious amounts of debug into the zfs driver and examine the reference counting, this allows me to see the ZFS ioctl() commands and various system calls using dump_stack() to see where the call chains were coming from.
@ColinIanKing what did you do to get a reliable destroy failure?
@stgraber just doing the following:
lxc launch ubuntu:bionic z1
lxc delete z1 --force
..and that fails, then re-running: "lxc delete z1 --force" it's OK.
Eoan, with 5.3 kernel, amd64, latest zfs + lxd/lxc
Same here but it's not failing.
I'm running current LXD from master, on Eoan with 5.3.0-10-generic and ZFS 0.8.1-1ubuntu11.
cking@sharkbay:~$ lxc launch ubuntu:bionic z1

How do I build/install the "master" version of LXD?
I doubt that's master making things more stable.
I just took a random MAAS node here, running up to date eoan and did:
root@edfu:~# snap refresh lxd --edge
lxd (edge) git-ad13b57 from Canonical✓ refreshed
root@edfu:~# lxd init
Would you like to use LXD clustering? (yes/no) [default=no]:
Do you want to configure a new storage pool? (yes/no) [default=yes]:
Name of the new storage pool [default=default]:
Name of the storage backend to use (btrfs, ceph, dir, lvm, zfs) [default=zfs]:

Would you like to use an existing block device? (yes/no) [default=no]:
Size in GB of the new loop device (1GB minimum) [default=43GB]:
Would you like to connect to a MAAS server? (yes/no) [default=no]:
Would you like to create a new local network bridge? (yes/no) [default=yes]:
What should the new bridge be called? [default=lxdbr0]:
What IPv4 address should be used? (CIDR subnet notation, “auto” or “none”) [default=auto]:
What IPv6 address should be used? (CIDR subnet notation, “auto” or “none”) [default=auto]:
Would you like LXD to be available over the network? (yes/no) [default=no]:
Would you like stale cached images to be updated automatically? (yes/no) [default=yes]
Would you like a YAML "lxd init" preseed to be printed? (yes/no) [default=no]:
Followed by:
root@edfu:~# for i in $(seq 50); do lxc launch --quiet ubuntu:bionic b1 ; lxc delete -f b1; done
Also, not a single error in this case, so there clearly is more than just installing current LXD on eoan and deleting some containers, otherwise our automated CI would have long run into those issues.
In https://github.com/lxc/lxd/blob/master/lxd/storage_zfs_utils.go#L255 the umount is done by
err := unix.Unmount(mountpoint, unix.MNT_DETACH)
The umount2(2) manpage writes about MNT_DETACH:
Perform a lazy unmount: make the mount point unavailable for new accesses, immediately disconnect the filesystem and all filesystems mounted below it from each other and from the mount table, and actually perform the unmount when the mount point ceases to be busy.
Could this be it? The MNT_DETACH umount looks partially asynchronous. All the subsequent destroy commands may fail because they keep the mount point busy. Finally the retry loop ends, the umount happens for real and the following destroy succeeds.
This must be the root issue, I was tracing the system calls and zfs ioctl() activity and was seeing the mount occur in the wrong order, and with async umounting this is most probably what is happening.
What doesn't make sense is that the destroy loop isn't a tight loop, we're waiting 500ms in between calls, so that's plenty of time for the kernel to flush things.
That's indeed strange, given that the second command in
lxc delete X --force ; lxc delete X
suceeds even if the first failed, and there are certainly less than 500ms between them.
But there could be an explaination for this. For example: does the kernel flush the pending async umounts initiated by a process when the process terminates? Just throwing an idea, this isn't really my territory.
When a process exits it will drop the reference count, so perhaps pending async umounts could indeed be actioned at that point. IMHO, async umounts should be avoided when possible to avoid any potential race windows.
That's not it. LXD is a daemon process running as root, lxc is just a REST API client, so your lxc delete doesn't itself call umount or destroy, the main LXD process does and that process isn't exiting at all.
The issue with umount2 is that there is no MNT_REC flag for it, so you can't unmount an entire tree without using MNT_DETACH.
What about an umount with MNT_DETACH followed by an umount without it?
won't work, MNT_DETACH immediately gets rid of the mount entry, you can't call umount on it after that
I'm happy to see that a workaround is coming: https://github.com/lxc/lxd/commit/4ae5fe257077bfffb0af43200e6263128fc3029c :) I just have two comments on it:
if code block? See the inline comment I made.Unmount(mountpoint, 0) fails we're still relying on the MNT_DETACH umount to be fully done in 1 second. Is this assumption safe? This already bitten us after all. But I admit it's not clear to me when a recursive umount is needed (that is, when we actually need MNT_DETACH). Wouldn't a recursive umount be safer?Thanks! I'm looking forward to the next LXD beta.
@paride well, to be frank, I don't expect this change to have any impact as the unmount on destroy code path shouldn't ever be taken. Dataset unmount happens during container shutdown which happens way before destroy. But seeing how you and @ColinIanKing seemed convinced that this was where the problem is and I still don't have a reliable reproducer for this, it was much simpler to add code which I don't expect to ever run (so won't slow anyone down) than keep arguing about it not being the right spot :) If this does fix it somehow, then the question will become why is the dataset getting mounted between volume unmount and destroy, if it doesn't help, then maybe we can get back to looking at what's going on with zfs destroy.
If either of you have a reliable reproducer for this on your systems, you could update to the edge channel and see if that somehow goes away, if not, then 3.18 to be released in the next couple of days will have that logic.
I updated to edge (git-873f6e0, includes the relevant commit), and nothing changed. I still get the exact same behavior.
Good, so at least that makes sense :)
Good then, however I'm still a bit wary of those async umounts. For example, as the umount that happens at shutdown is async too (if I don't go wrong!), the if block
https://github.com/lxc/lxd/blob/master/lxd/storage_zfs_utils.go#L254
never runs (as you say), even if the umount hasn't been done for real. It's still pending in the kernel, without a specific deadline. Should the logic implemented in that if block go into the first umount that is tried on lxc delete --force, which I think is the one happening at shutdown?
The first Unmount is done thorugh zfsUmount which calls zfs unmount which is a sync unmount, it's only in the event that this zfs unmount fails 10 times in a row where we call a direct lazy unmount through the kernel.
I just realized while debugging this that the zfs commands are actually inside the lxd snap hence why my installed debug'd zfs package is not being called :-(
I'd like to snap this up correctly, so can you provide me the info on how you create the lxd snap so I can debug this further?
I tried to use the snapcraft file from /snap/lxd/current/snap/snapcraft.yaml with the latest snapcraft edge on Eoan to build lxd and got:
$ snapcraft
Launching a VM.
core18 20191001 from Canonical✓ installed
snapcraft 3.8+git35.g3529f195 from Canonical✓ installed
Failed to pull source: unable to determine source type of 'snapcraft/empty'.
Check that the URL is correct or consider specifying source-type for this part. See snapcraft help sources for more information.
Run the same command again with --debug to shell into the environment if you wish to introspect this failure.
Basically, I'm trying to build lxd with a debugged version of zfs but I can't even get the initial lxd snap to builld :-(
git clone https://github.com/lxc/lxd-pkg-snap
cd lxd-pkg-snap
snapcraft
Note that one trick that you can do with snaps is to bind-mount your test binaries/libraries over the original in /snap/lxd/current/...
This would save you from having to rebuild everything every time (which can take over half an hour in the case of the LXD snap).
So, I've added debug into the zfs driver for the ioctl() commands zfs mount/umount and destroy calls. Below is a dmesg dump of the debug for the following scenario:
$ lxc launch ubuntu:bionic test2
1st time, fails:
$ lxc delete test2 --force
Error: Failed to destroy ZFS dataset: Failed to run: zfs destroy -r default/containers/test2: cannot destroy 'default/containers/test2': dataset is busy
2nd time, successful:
$ lxc delete test2 --force
as one can see the destroy is failing because the force is trying to destroy a mounted test2 zfs file systems that is not umounted.
== Launch ==
$ lxc launch ubuntu:bionic test2

So I followed the lxd build commands and built it on a clean bionic amd64 server using the snapcraft edge and when it gets to the Building lxd step I get:
Building lxd
What version of snapcraft are you using? Our snap is built from that branch on Launchpad, so this should just work and has normally always worked for me here. Though I do remember doing snapcraft --use-lxd lately following the latest major release bump of snapcraft.
Clean bionic and snapcraft 3.8 it builds fine. I'll try and debug this tomorrow when I get some free time.
Did a clean rebuild today and got:

any ideas?
Upstream libseccomp broke, they split a bunch of headers into that seccomp-syscalls.h but don't actually install the file as far as I can tell...
Going to play with it a bit, confirm they messed up, file a bug and figure out how to tell snapcraft to just copy the header into place for now.
OK, so with plenty of debug in the zfs driver and watching lxd and lxc processes with forkstat I was able to get the following activity traced:

[ 3305.398620] zfs_umount() (16966 lxc) -> 0
The tracking at the end can't be correct, according to this you're saying that lxc delete itself is causing the zfs_preumount/zfs_umount which is impossible. The lxc command line tool is only a network REST API client, it doesn't itself interact with the local system at all, everything it does is achieved through sending HTTP requests over a unix socket.
Looking at the ordering prior to that, I'm also failing to see a problem (other than the EBUSY).
The server side of that lxc delete call does show a umount happening and succeeding, followed by pre-removal sanity checks (various zfs get and zfs list), culminating to the final zfs destroy call which then fails.
I'm failing to understand why the information from the netlink connector on process fork/exec/exec is providing data that seems to be incorrect. Tomorrow I will add instrumentation into the kernel to printk each fork/exec/exit to see what exactly is happening.
dmesg.log
Attached is the dmesg log, this time showing all fork(), exec() and exit() system call activity.
The debug annotations are as follows:
do_exit: 5888 dmesg -> 0 means PID 5888 (named dmesg) exited with exit value 0
do_fork(): 5881 test.sh -> 5893 test.sh process 5881 forked child with PID 5893
5893 test.sh -> /snap/bin/lxd.lxc -> process 5893 exec'd program /snap/bin/lxd.lxc
At the end of the log we have:
[ 103.734066] zfs_preumount() (8705 lxc) zfsvfs = 000000002e1f918e

[ 88.106220] do_fork(): 5881 test.sh -> 5893 test.sh
and test.sh is essentially:
V=test2
lxd.lxc launch ubuntu:bionic $V
lxd.lxc delete $V --force
I'm calling lxd.lxc just to sanity check that I'm calling the snapd version. So unless the kernel is lying, this does not seem to match your assertions, so I'm perplexed by this.
Feel free to strace lxc.lxc if you need convincing, but I guarantee you that there is no umount call inside that particular binary :)
Yep, totally agree. Added a dump_stack to the do_exit() to see what's happening. So when the lxc exits the exit calls do_group_exit, then do_exit and then a worker task is run to cleanup the zfs mount. So it looks like a postponed umount.
I wonder if this is because a lazy umount is causing the umount when the moint point ceases to become busy.
I don't see how lxc would keep the mountpoint busy though, it doesn't know anything about those mountpoints and certainly never tries to access any file under them.
I'm going to see where the work tasks are being added that kick off the umount, that will give some insight.
The exit of the lxc process via do_exit calls exit_task_namespaces -> switch_task_namespaces -> free_nsproxy -> put_mnt_ns -> drop_collected_mounts -> namespace_unlock ->
mntput_no_expire.
mntput_no_expire adds __cleanup_mnt() to process' task work list, which in turn gets called asynchronously at the death of the lxc process. And this unmounts the zfs file system.
We've now rolled out a fix for some, maybe even all of those issues.
The issue that was clearly identified and now resolved in the current stable snap (latest or 3.18 track) was related to lxc delete -f being run as a non-root user while using the snap package.
In this case, the way snapd manages mount namespaces was causing the zfs mount to be held by a forked of the mount namespace, preventing it from fully going away until all lxc commands run by that user would exit, after which another delete attempt would succeed.
The fix is effectively a whole bunch more mount table magic now happening in the LXD snap.
While I've put some effort into trying to sort existing setups on snap refresh, this may not be perfect for everyone, so if refreshing your lxd snap doesn't fully resolve the issue, reboot your system and see if it's behaving properly then.
As part of this, I've also significantly improved logging for the mount logic in the snap package, so failures to reshuffle the mount table on snap startup will now result in errors being logged in journalctl -b0 -u snap.lxd.daemon.
Thanks @stgraber. I updated the LXD snap to version 3.18 (12181) and rebooted a couple of machines. In the first couple of days the problem seemed fixed, however here it is again:
$ lxc launch ubuntu:bionic b ; sleep 2 ; lxc delete b --force
Creating b
Starting b
Error: Failed to destroy ZFS dataset: Failed to run: zfs destroy -r mypool/lxd-dataset/containers/b: cannot destroy 'mypool/lxd-dataset/containers/b': dataset is busy
This is on my up-to-date Eoan laptop, but happens also on Bionic (GA kernel):
$ lxc launch ubuntu:bionic b ; sleep 2 ; lxc delete b --force
Creating b
Starting b
Error: Failed to destroy ZFS dataset: Failed to run: zfs destroy -r lxd/containers/b: cannot destroy 'lxd/containers/b': dataset is busy
Both the systems were rebooted after refreshing the LXD snap:
$ snap info lxd
[...]
refresh-date: 2 days ago, at 08:49 UTC
channels:
stable: 3.18 2019-10-12 (12181) 57MB -
$ uptime
10:08:26 up 2 days, 1:08, 3 users, load average: 2,28, 2,71, 3,56
This is now happening every time, as before. As I wrote in the Launchpad bug, the behavior I observe is the system switching from a "good state" (containers always get deleted successfully) to a "bad state" (the "dateset is busy" error is always hit). I can't tell what triggers the switch.

I collected some logs, as you mentioned that logging should now be more informative. So after doing
sudo snap set lxd daemon.debug=true
sudo systemctl reload snap.lxd.daemon
Here is the output of journalctl -b0 -u snap.lxd.daemon after running lxc launch ubuntu:bionic b on my Eoan laptop:

@paride Can you get me:
journalctl -b0 -u snap.lxd.daemonI want to make sure that the mount table entries all match what we'd expect.
Make sure that you have at least one freshly created container before capturing those mountinfo ones.
Sure. Pastebin: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/kRcbMR6XP6/ (but note that when I bootedI still had to set daemon.debug=true)
In what follows the container named b was created right before capturing the mountinfo, and did show the "dataset is busy" when I later tried to delete it.

Now that's weird, there are no errors around failure to setup the mount propagation bits and the intermediate mounts are present, but the propagation settings aren't there...
Can you show:
So hopefully I can get a test VM which mostly matches this to see why we would have the kernel tell us propagation was applied but then not have it actually be set.
On the Eoan machine:

@paride ok, the current stable snap should have a fix for that one.
I'm testing it, so far so good, but let's give it a few days before declaring the issue fully solved.
@paride still good on your side?
@stgraber,
Well, this is still failing for me. I'm on latest stable lxd snap (3.18/12211)
I have attempted to grab all the information you had requested from paride and attached lxc-info.txt. I'm not sure the debug settings actually stuck though, as journalctl doesn't look like paride's did.
let me know if you need anything else.
@smoser the mount propagation intermediate mount appears missing in your case which would explain the behavior. Did you reboot your system at some point after Oct 16th?
If not, could you reboot, start a few containers and get me the output of cat /proc/$(pgrep daemon.start)/mountinfo?
In theory, stopping all containers and restarting LXD may also achieve most of the same effect, though having a clear starting point with the new logic in place would certainly be better.
I have not rebooted since the 16th. So I'll try rebooting tomorrow and try to remember to report back here. thanks for taking a look.
@stgraber after a week, still good. From my point of view the issue looks fixed. Thanks a lot!
@paride good to hear, will wait to confirm that @smoser's setup looks good after reboot and then we can hopefully close this.
Well... i rebooted, and survived a
lxc launch ubuntu-daily:eoan e1 && lxc delete --force e1
which was failing yesterday. It wasn't 100% recreate previously, but when it got into a bad state it would stay there. I'll keep fingers crossed.
@smoser can you show that mountinfo data? (cat /proc/$(pgrep daemon.start)/mountinfo)
$ cat /proc/$(pgrep daemon.start)/mountinfo

@smoser good, so you do have the intermediate mount in there now and your containers are all properly underneath it, so that should work as expected.
Tentatively closing this issue.
This is excellent news. Thanks for solving this @stgraber.
