it's because the base rating is the one you had when entering the tourney, not when the tourney started.

I guess players ratings should be refreshed on tournament start.

aha. that's definitely unexpected behavior from the user's perspective. even refreshing on tournament start is not exactly what we are interested in, given that it's possible to play games outside the tourney. the calculation should ideally be the rating diff across all my games only in this tournament
