Lila: Tiered Donation Icons

I think it's an interesting idea. I think quasi-gamifying donations will make people more excited to do it. Give it some thought! Possible icon options, because I love surfing game-icons.net:

Maybe you even let people choose from a few if they reach the top tier.

I don't think this is something we want to pursue. Measuring players by their wallets feels wrong.

Perhaps in your opinion, but I respectfully disagree - we have _already_ taken the stance that we're willing to display who donates and who doesn't, and we have a donations page that's (as far as I can tell), closely or literally ranked by total donation. Why not make donations more fun? I get it, we don't want to put down players that can't afford to donate, but I guess I don't view it that way. It has always been the lichess ethos that everything is free all the time - I have never looked at a green dot and thought less of someone. Hide the tier values, I don't care.

We already rank chess players by rating and give away awesome trophies to those who win marathons and those who score highly on the leader-boards - I have never measured people's value, character, whatever, by their rating either.

The Lichess spirit is:

Lichess is one of the most popular chess websites in the world while remaining 100% free. Most “free” websites subsist by selling ads or selling user data. Others do it by putting all the good stuff behind paywalls. Lichess does none of these things and never will. With no investors demanding profits, Lichess staff can focus on improving the site as their only goal.

IMHO further tiers should be reserved for something exceptional such as lifetime patron rather than the addictive gimmicky things Twitch does.
