Leakcanary: This was not authorized

Created on 3 Apr 2020  Â·  7Comments  Â·  Source: square/leakcanary

I did not authorize this app or extension or whatever it is to be installed on my device. Furthermore I do not like the fact that my Amazon Music icon on my home screen was changed to this and now when I try to launch Amazon music this pops up. So please explain to me how and why this app suddenly appeared where my Amazon music app should be. Thank you. Also why do I have to sign up for an account to ask about this issue.

Imagine bringing your car to mechanic to fix engine. They will jack it up, connect a troubleshooting system to analyze error code, fix things and return it back to you. Car = 'Amazon Music', Mechanic = 'Amazon', Troubleshooting system = 'Leak Canary'
In this case you got your car back with this troubleshooting system still connected to it, and it takes a lot of space (probably half of the car), so it's almost impossible to drive. There's no point to contact manufacturer of this equipment, you should go to the mechanic and ask them to remove it.

Hope this analogy helped.

Hello!

Leak Canary is a development tool that is not supposed to be included in the app when it is released to Play Store. Apparently, Amazon developers made a mistake and added it to latest update in a way that it replaced the real app's launcher - that's why it launches Leak Canary instead of Amazon Music.

Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do on our end to fix it. It is Amazon who should make an update and remove Leak Canary library from their app.

You can leave them feedback on the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amazon.mp3 or contact their support to raise the issue. We tried reaching out to them via Twitter, yet, currently don't know whether they are aware of this problem.

That should be your job. You designed it. FIX IT!!

I've been a heavy equipment mechanic for 30 years. The analogy sucks.
Amazon like Toyota and the Big 3 are going to take forever to address the
issue. I'm asking for a quick fix.

Ah, I tried my best with this analogy.
But that doesn't change the fact that there's absolutely nothing we can do on our end to fix it. Even if we could release some kind of fix Amazon would still have to pick it and make another release on their end. We don't have any way to push updates to their apps, and there's no server-side config that we could change.
Leak Canary is just a library that Amazon used in an incorrect way and broke their app.

Well tried with the analogy @Armaxis ! @dumpman545 I hope Amazon Music fixed this and things got back to normal for you, we tried raising a big stink but I haven't seen much of a response. I don't know exactly how they managed to get things this wrong, if they did tell us we could work on preventing this from happening in the future.

@dumpman545 I might have another analogy: imagine if you went to the McDonald's drive-thru and you orderered a big mac with fries and Coke. then you get home and see that they put a Fanta in there, and then you complain to the Coca Cola inc. that they should change your Fanta to Coke.

Even in this analogy, Coca Cola inc has more power to change things because they could theoretically stop selling Fanta to McD, but also they have a contract so they know they know that McD is selling their products. In the case of this library, anyone can use it and put it in their apps without the library owner giving permission or even knowing about it.
