Layer5: [Site] Add contributing section to the /community page

Created on 11 Aug 2020  ยท  26Comments  ยท  Source: layer5io/layer5

Description

The community page is lacking a contributing section. This section should include:

  • An exhaustive list of the mailing lists that we use (so that people can subscribe / unsubscribe)
  • Links to the meeting minutes
  • The community calendar (preferably with a list of meeting times)
  • Links to our video conferences

The contributing section can be included above the Start contributing button and the body of text below the button can be moved up and adjusted to fit in.

The layer5 repo contains two websites. The current generation and the next-generation of the layer5.io site.

If the layer5-ng label is absent on this issue, then this issue pertains to the current generation of the layer5.io website, which uses Jekyll and GitHub Pages. Site content is found under the master branch.

If the layer5-ng label is present on this issue, then this issue pertains to the next-generation of the layer5.io website, which uses Gatsby, Strapi, and GitHub Pages. Site content is found under the layer5-ng branch.

@Neilblaze first of all why do you keep different names at all places it make difficult to find out which one is you๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ.(Just kidding).
Secondly, good eye. The new smp site needs a lot of revamping as many new features are to be added, since it's just a newly created site by the efforts of @chandrashritii (which I think is a newbie in this ), though she has pulled out the site incredibly nice.
So, feel free to point out changes or suggestions that need to be done and create issues for them.

Actually if you search by "Neilblaze" on google or over any search engine, you'll get to see me everywhere ๐Ÿ˜†
But, in general if you search by "my name" only, then I guess it'll be a bit of a trouble finding me out ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚

Rest thanks for the suggestion :100:

@chandrashritii help me sort out some doubts.

  • What do you mean by this - An exhaustive list of the mailing lists that we use (so that people can subscribe / unsubscribe)?
  • Since we are already providing Community Calendar links (As you mentioned in bullet no.2), I think it'll be better if we ignore adding Links to meeting minutes!
  • If I am not wrong, then the links to video conferences are already present through the existing YouTube button.

Also , another thing that I would like to point out is that, if you closely observe the Engage section of the community page in responsive view, there are a bit of alignment problems, which needs to be fixed! I am attaching screenshot for reference.

What say @Nikhil-Ladha

Further, the desired changes that are to be done, could be better explained by @chandrashritii herself.

Haha ๐Ÿคฃ I thought about this too. I think we need to add it to the welcome guide "your git id should be same as workspace handle" ๐Ÿค”

Cloned and forked again

Lost count of how many times i did this , the files are not alike, not completely an html file.

Yes, they may not be a proper HTML file because they are not supposed to :slightly_smiling_face:
The site is built using Jekyll, and you need to build the site to run the site locally. Please follow the documentation for the commands on how to do this.

https://github.com/layer5io/layer5/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md

@Pariola-droid Let's have a quick chat on Slack about this. As @Nikhil-Ladha explained, the site runs on jekyll and you have to follow a particular process to run it locally.

@chandrashritii Any progress here?
