Laravel-mix: Why is Laravel Mix so painfully slow?

Created on 18 Mar 2021  路  7Comments  路  Source: JeffreyWay/laravel-mix

It used to take me less than a second to compile code, then all of a sudden It takes me more than 30 seconds. I uninstalled a bunch of npm packages and have even less code than when it took less than a second to compile but it still takes soooo long to compile. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP

I know I have postcss folders in my node_modules, but I don't think i ever intentionally installed it, so anything with postcss likely came prepackaged since i don't ever remember using it. AND i dont use sass

We'd love to help but need more details. Can you please provide a reproduction repo that exhibits the slowness?

Some of it is webpack related and we have little control over that. In addition, if you are doing a production build, minification is a CPU intensive process and can take a significant amount of time when you have a lot of modules / files.

here is my package.json and webpack.mix.js. Both are very basic and barbones so I don't understand why this is going so slowly?? Please help

webpack.mix.js

const mix = require('laravel-mix');
/*
 |--------------------------------------------------------------------------
 | Mix Asset Management
 |--------------------------------------------------------------------------
 |
 | Mix provides a clean, fluent API for defining some Webpack build steps
 | for your Laravel application. By default, we are compiling the Sass
 | file for the application as well as bundling up all the JS files.
 |
 */

mix.js('resources/js/app.js', 'public/js')
    .vue()
    //.extract(['vue'])
    .sass('resources/sass/app.scss', 'public/css');

Few more questions:

  1. At a high level what's in your app.js file?
  2. Are you using any PostCSS plugins?
  3. Compiling sass (or other css preprocessors) can be much slower than using something like PostCSS.

Here is the top of my public/app.js file. It works sometimes, but every once in a while it is either 1. works, but is very slow to compile (30s+), 2. does work and does compile but doesnt update when i use npm run watch. 3. or just npm run dev and npm run watch doesnt works at all so i have to delete my node_modules and reinstall node again to make it work.

I have never touched webpack and only code in vue so I don't know why it suddently breaks!!

I know I have postcss folders in my node_modules, but I don't think i ever intentionally installed it, so anything with postcss likely came prepackaged since i don't ever remember using it. AND i dont use sass

Things like this are very difficult to assist with if we don't have any concrete example. For example, the Laracasts codebase compiles in about 5 seconds. With the watcher running, it recompiles almost instantly.

Play around with you webpack.mix.js file, comment out certain lines to figure out what is slowing down your compile, and then come back and update this thread.
