As part of the discussion of https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/9253, it was ultimately decided to remove the zoom in/zoom out capabilities so that we could talk more about how it should work and where it should be, so that https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/9253 could be merged without waiting for this discussion (see conversation starting here).
That PR originally added the zoom in/out as follows:
Let's change the tooltips to read "Expand time range" and "Contract time range" to help users learn what they do.
Looking at the attached animation I think that this will not help in case of embedded dashboard(with no navigation bar)
Honestly, there is no need for Zoom In. One can use the click zoom or select a time slice in the currently shown diagram.
But Zoom Out is essential. Especially in Discovery. For example, after Zoom In, I usually change the query parameters and then I want to Zoom Out using the same parameters. Using the "History Back" does not work most of the time.
I see #9253 has been merged and it should, I guess, be present in the UI. However, firing up the newest Kibana does not show these buttons. How can it be turned on?
Ok, I found that a5497d1027707a4ff6fa5c7fb1ffd2b14fcc228b removed the Zoom buttons. But why? This is a great functionality!
Please bring back zoom buttons!!!!!
Why isnt this being discussed, if discussion is the only blocker to bring it back. Seems like a fairly important change?
So we're approaching 1.5 years now....what's the status on this?
At least a zoom-out shortcut (double-click or ctrl+scroll down and/or keys only like ctrl -) is really needed. For zooming in, it's already with selecting an area
Or maybe a "reset to previous time-frame" button...
It's hard to believe that any Kibana user would percieve some cognitive dissonance with having the magnifying glasses next to the time controls. Grafana has the same setup and seems to work very well. It doesn't have map views, that's sure, but map views have their own zoom level controls anyway. Kibana had it and we used them happily.
