Kibana: "Latest" metric agg

Created on 12 Apr 2016  路  31Comments  路  Source: elastic/kibana

Using the top_hits agg we can create a pseudo metric agg called "Latest" (or Top?) that pulls the latest value of any field sorted by another field. By default it should be by the index pattern's associated time field. Could also do a "Earliest" i suppose.

I'm glad it is finally being added as a feature, but I'm pretty astonished that it has taken this long for Kibana to have this type of visualisation.

Also, is this a symptom of a larger issue with the way to be able to add custom metrics/visualisations by locking ranges to certain relative values?
E.g. what about the 'first' of the range, not just the 'last', etc.

Really desperately need this one, so very happy it's in review. however, when I look at the project page, I can't see this one listed as neither in review or approved?

Or perhaps I'm looking at the wrong page? Which release this fix/enhancement scheduled for, and what's the best assumption on when it will be available?

@olesk75 sorry for the confusion, that project page is just an experiment with GitHub's new project feature. This feature isn't scheduled for a specific release, it'll probably go out in the first 5.x minor that's released after the code has been merged.

Aha, thanks for clearing that up.

@ppisljar - any update? It's been waiting for review for three months now, and would be an awesome feature to add. I'm sure you've all been busy with the v5 releases but this would make a lot of lives easier (and dashboards more awesome).

@tedivm #7302 is still in progress and is currently actively worked on (you can check the issue to see where it is at this point). Its hard to say when it'll be ready but its one of my highest priorities. You are right, we were very busy with v5 lately so this did get delayed quite a bit.

@gclem this is already implemented, its called top hits metric aggregation

@ppisljar I tried with Kibana 5.2.1 but couldn't see it. Am I right, that this is a new option for aggregation on visualisation level?

its a new metric, called Top Hits, i'll come back with a screenshot ...

I upgraded today and also can't seem to find it.

@guenhter @tedivm it's on the 5.3 branch

Thanks for clarification.
Hope this one will be released soon...

Will this one help me to show if a host/service is up/down, by using the heartbeat beat?

I would just like to show a yes/no or red/green dashbord object based on the latest "up" true or false from the heartbeat but i cant figure out a good way in kibana....

Yup, sounds like it should work for what you want to do @bassebaba

Feature is great. Very intuitive (Kibana 5.3.0) Thanks!
