Karabiner-elements: Cannot install Karabiner 13.0.0 driver

Created on 30 Oct 2020  Â·  17Comments  Â·  Source: pqrs-org/Karabiner-Elements

• macOS version: Catalina 10.15.7
• Karabiner version: 13.0.0
• Your Mac hardware: 2019 iMac 4K
• Your keyboard hardware: Leopold FC750R

After upgrading to Karabiner 13.0.0 I'm not able to use it. Every time I open Karabiner Preferences I see driver alert window, which tells how to reinstall the driver. Reinstall doesn't have any effect.

Update: I uninstalled and re-installed version 13.1.0 and managed to get things working. Here's what I did:

  • Clicked 'Uninstall Karabiner Elements' from KE preferences
  • Downloaded and ran the installer from https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/
  • Started the app
  • Granted permissions in the Security & Privacy settings (as prompted)
  • Clicked the 'activate driver' button in the KE alert window
  • Restarted my machine

Upon restart, everything worked as expected. Hoping this works for some of you, as I agree that downgrading to 12.10.0 isn't a great long-term fix.

I have the same problem. You can downgrade to 12.10.0, but obviously that's not a long-term solution.

I had the same issue.

Can someone confirm that "Placeholder Developer" belongs to the Karabiner developers?
Edit: Related issue

I have the same issue since upgrading to the latest version today.

I can remove the driver, and reboot, but after login the Active Driver button immediately fails with "Activation was failed. (error: 1)"

Security and Privacy does not show any blocked applications.

Running OSX Catalina. Worked fine in previous version.

Can confirm, rolling back to version 12 allows the program to function again.

Seeing the same issue as the above. OS X Catalina, window shows up every time I open. There is no message to 'Allow'.

....aaaand another one - same as the above.

"Can someone confirm that "Placeholder Developer" belongs to the Karabiner developers?"

I can't confirm from the code side, but I did allow "Placeholder Developer" and that allowed the app to work.

Showing "Placeholder Developer" is an issue of macOS.
You can choose one of the three options in this page:
https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/docs/help/troubleshooting/placeholder-developer/

Rolling back to 12.10.0 succeeds instantly (Catalina 10.15.7). Thank you to everyone who suggested it.

I am altogether too dependent on Karabiner-Elements to risk further upgrades without checking here first to see if this problem, which began with 13.0, persists.

I'm seeing the same issue here, after an upgrade to 13.1.0:

macOS version: 0.15.7
Karabiner Elements version: 13.1.0
Apple hardware: 2019 MBP 16-inch
Keyboard hardware: Kinesis Advantage2

After upgrading to 13.1.0 and deactivating the old driver, I restarted my computer (step 2) and upon restart, I immediately get the Security & Privacy System Preferences dialogue about allowing blocked apps. Clicking on this does nothing.

Following the instructions on deactivating the driver, restarting, reactivating the driver, and then allowing the app from the Security & Privacy settings also doesn't work for me. I get the dialogue as soon as my machine restarts, and ignoring it to click on the Activate driver button hangs with the message "Activating driver...".

I'll try rolling back, per others' suggestions, but I'm happy to help triage further if needed.

The driver installation failed for me, see this issue (now closed to avoid forking threads as 13.1 is also being discussed here): https://github.com/pqrs-org/Karabiner-Elements/issues/2493

Download from the website 13.1.0 and install again. Then everything works fine.

macOS version: 10.15.7
Karabiner Elements version: 13.1.0
Apple hardware: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)
Keyboard hardware: hp logitech keyboard

Ran into this as well w 13.1.0

I re-downloaded / uninstalled / reinstalled. No luck.

I reverted to 12.10.0 and that works for me.

FWIW I was seeing 'driver client mismatch' errors in the log window when trying to get 13.1.0 working.

I have followed these instructions, as well as the instructions here: https://github.com/pqrs-org/Karabiner-Elements/issues/1867 (and various similar threads)

None of them works: I don't see the 'Allow' button in the Security & Privacy window, even after closing every other application on my computer, restarting several times, uninstalling and reinstalling, et c. In short, try as I might, I cannot get Karabiner-Elements 12.10.0 or 13.1.0 to work on macOS Catalina 10.15.7. It worked fine less than a week ago, and now I've spent hours trying to get it up and running again to no avail. Is anyone else finding that it just isn't working?

For me the uninstall / reboot / download / install solved the issue, for version 13.1.0 on Catalina 10.15.7

Well seems, that it is a Sentinel One issue, since it's not compatible with DriverKit drivers.
https://github.com/pqrs-org/Karabiner-Elements/issues/2445#issuecomment-718327064

It was occurring for me and I've never even heard of SentinelOne, so no, that's probably not the only issue.
