Karabiner-elements: The Fn key of Macbook 2016 with Touchbar broken

When I turn on Apple Internal Keyboard in Devices tab, the fn key cannot switch Function key of touchbar.

When fn key pressed, the touchbar should display 12 function keys, but with Karabiner it dosen't.

And the virtual keyboard seem to replace total keymap of my JIS keyboard.

Rather a workaround than a real solution, but try putting your macbook to sleep. Chances are, that it will work after waking up :)

I have the same issue on my MBP with touch bar.

Putting the macbook to sleep isn't doing anything. I can remap other keys
just not the fn key.

+1 to original issue and +1 to @epegzz 's fix of putting it to sleep and waking it up again.

I am not 100% on this, but I believe I triggered this problem by manually quitting and restarting Karabiner-Elements. I had never had it happen before when it was simply running from the time I logged in until the time I shut down. Then again, I also updated the software recently, which I hadn't done in nearly a month, so there could be other stuff going on.

For what it's worth, I originally triggered this issue while investigating another one -- Karabiner-Elements appears to kill fine-grained volume/brightness control on the Touch Bar MacBook Pro (e.g. hold Shift+Option keys while hitting the brightness/volume buttons on the Touch Bar to change the levels in fractional increments). As soon as I quit Karabiner-Elements, I can do it again. Guess I should probably open up a separate issue for that... though I feel like these two issues could potentially be related?

I have the same issue. The trick with sleep does work.

You have to let the display sleep for 15 or so seconds before waking it up to get this 'trick' to allow the fn key to be used

I have the same problem and might found a quick solution to it:
try typing the password after logging in TouchID or user group to unlock once. After that the Fn switch would be working as normal before you restart or logout.
